Love’s Exceptions

When you’re in love,

I guess, you gravitate away from everybody else.

When you think you’re separate from your friends because of them.

You belong to them and only them,

Because of the faith you still have in them,

But it won’t last,

It never lasts.

Not when the problems arise,

And the ones you can’t learn to fix are there,

And the ones you thought you’d know how to handle aren’t…

When you’re in love,

You fall in past the point of hitting ground,

Until the ground hits you,

And you have nowhere to go any more.

You’re lost in a sense of belonging,

The kind that never belongs to you,

No matter what you say.

When you ask yourself whether,

You’re crazy or just blind,

And then it turns out both are in equal positions,

And you have to pick both before you can lift yourself up again…

But he looks like a fair-haired angel,

In a Rembrandt painting,

And he speaks like your favorite song,

When it’s the only thing in your life that persists,

So when the hostility of dreams might bind you,

And blind you,

And you can see where the chapter ends,

You’ll know…

That he’s the words you’ll sing when you’re gone,

When you’re far away,

He was with you yesterday,

That you’ve looked into the beautiful storm in his eyes,

Because you wanted to remember,

If you ever fell blind,

You can’t see past the day he was there,

You’ve walked those meadows,

You ran those paddocks,

And as soon as he walked into your life,

He fixed everything,

But as soon as he walked out,

Everything you ever loved,

Everything you ever dreamed,

He took it all with him,

Within him you lose yourself,

Without him, you find yourself wanting to be lost again…

                                            You never lose by loving,

                                                                  You lose by holding back…
