"no cap, this came out way better than i thought it would" i said after a few bites
"see, and you tried to play me"
"nigga whatever. you still ain't got shit on my moms rasta pasta. this calm though"
he shrugged then poured himself some more wine.
"where you from anyways. i know your dad was black but you got some type of indian in you?" i asked
"my mom is bahamian, and my pops was guyanese and trini"
"no funny you just sounded like one of them white people who be reading their ancestry results. 56% greek, 42% polish, and you can't forget the 2% african"
"that really how it be though" he said as we laughed
"and of course that's they excuse for saying nigga"
the laughing soon died down as we both continued to eat.
"how you feel about that?" i asked
"what?"
"white people saying nigga"
he looked as if he were in deep thought which confused me. the answer should come right off the tongue. unacceptable and that's just that.
"...what about hispanic people" i added
"not gonna lie, i don't go too crazy when it's said by anyone. like yeah they shouldn't be saying it at all, but neither should we but we do right? we can jack that it's a negative word that we rebranded and use in a non-oppressive way, yet it's still the same shit. i say it, so how i'm gonna judge someone else for saying it 'cus of they skin. that's low-key self segregation 'cus it's a word for only colored—"
"definitely not the same thing" i said cutting him off
"i meant in terms of the only blacks being able to say it, not the oppressive part behind it. i see both sides of the argument so it's kinda hard for me to explain. but yeah if a white person says it next to me, imma look at 'em crazy. but not go as far as to give 'em a speech and go off as some people would. i think it would be best if we all ain't say it honestly. but it's so deep into our vocabulary that it'll be hard to stop. i try not to say it but when it comes out i can't do nothing bout it"
he makes some valid points but at the end of the day whites—non-black people in general are not valid on saying the word. some minorities be thinking just 'cus they a minority they can say it too. but it don't work that way though.
