Nobody talked about Maia as we continued along the way. I watched as Alaska stared in wonder at this land, I saw her recognize things, mumble about things that had changed, and smile when things were the same.

The most amazing thing was how untouched and thriving Alaska was. Obviously the sun flares had hit them, it's climate had completely changed and was more jungle like than ever, there were small snowy patched and even a few desert areas. But Alaska had survived and adapted and that was the greatest accomplishment because no one else had survived.

"If we follow this road we should make it to anchorage by tomorrow," Alaska stated as she sat on what used to be a road- the wilderness had overtaken it and it now looked like a well beaten path. "It's the only logical place to go, Fairbanks would be too cold and close to polar bears, even though it does have a food supply. I say we camp here and then we move quickly tomorrow, get to anchorage by tomorrow night."

The group nodded in agreement and began setting up camp.

"Hey Alaska?" I heard Jaxx start as I finished setting up a tent. I glanced back at them. "I'm gonna head out and see if those power lines I saw work, if they do, it means there's a better chance of the immunes they sent here surviving."

Alaska scoffed, "that makes sense but you're not going alone."

Jaxx frowned, shaking his head, "I go alone or not at all," he mumbled.

"How do I explain to razor that Maia was attacked and then I just let you leave, if something happens to you?"

"You say I disobeyed orders," he mumbled before slinging his pack over his shoulder and wandering off.

"Alaska," I called as I jogged over, running my fingers thru my hair, "blimey, he's gone thru hell lately, mate wants to be alone, let him," I said calmly. She glared.

"Thomas!" She yelled to the brown haired boy, "follow jaxx."

He nodded before running off.

"Don't tell me what to do," Alaska mumbled before heading into the middle of camp where ratchet had started a fire.

I sighed. Alaska had heard me say I loved her, and she didn't love me back, that was the only explanation for her weird behavior.

As the sun went down, we sat around the fire, heating our provisions and sharing stories. I felt bad, I'd been harsh to newt, but my emotions were a wreck- I was stressed, and seeing my home was so... Unreal. My dad had lied to me. Growing up with a republic leader as a father seemed like it would be good, but it wasn't. I knew bits and pieces of the truth but I couldn't connect the dots. Being with newt connected the dots between wicked and the republic. Newt was helping connect the dots, but When we moved out of Alaska, I was told we'd never be able to see it again.

"You really think we'll find them in anchorage?" Rae, one of the lower ranked troops on the mission asked. She had silver blonde hair and pale green eyes, her eyes were big and too far apart, making her resemble an owl.

"It makes sense, the wicked would have sent them somewhere secure, where they can start a life without worry, anchorage is the best place." I caught newt stand up out of the corner of my eye and make his way towards his tent- one I wouldn't be sharing with him. As I stood to turn in for the night I noticed jaxx walking back to camp, smiling.

"What'd you find?" I called. He nodded.

"It works, power works up here," he told me with a grin. "Means that they most likely survived."

I nodded, mumbling a good job. Thomas hadn't come back yet, obviously because he didn't want to make the fact that he'd followed jaxx known. I sighed before unzipping my tent and climbing in, drifting asleep.

A good leader doesn't rest unless all his ducks are in a row. So even though I'm not I'm charge, I didn't sleep, because thomas never came back. When the sun began to rise, I woke up a low ranked trio of troop, sludge, Matt, and lissa. We started out quiet, looking for signs of thomas. We'd split up, and made it a few miles into the woods when I heard lissa's scream. I ran, my limp not holding me back, when I stumbled into a clearing. Blood and fur everywhere I saw lissa's dark hair as she bent over and puked. Something had ripped thomas apart in the night.

A few hours later matt and sludge had brought Alaska back to check out the scene. She showed no emotions as she mumbled the word "wolves," and turned to leave.

We made it back to camp, not a word from Alaska as we began packing up and following the old road.

"It was actually brilliant to send immunes here," I heard rae whisper to ratchet, her eyes wide. "They could start a new world here."

"Well obviously they didn't," Alaska snapped. Everyone grew quiet. Alaska was still weak, and it was obvious by the way she clung to a knife and hugged the side of the road, ready to grab a tree when she needed to be steadied.

We'd been moving for a few hours when we heard the rustling, followed by a howl.

"Bloody hell, what the hell is that?" I exclaimed as everyone stopped moving.

"Wolves," Alaska mumbled as a shadowy figure emerged onto the road ahead of us.
