You were roused from your sleep by a baby's wail. You rubbed your eyes as you sat up. Your husband groaned in his sleep and sat up. "I'll get him," Enjolras mumbled as he brushed a kiss to your temple and swung his legs out of the bed. You settled back into bed, but didn't fall asleep. "Alright, little one." Enjolras yawned as he leaned over the crib. He expertly lifted your son and began rocking him gently. "Diaper?" He checked. "Nope." He looked at you and grinned in relief. "Hungry?" He asked. You sat up and motioned for your son. Enjolras sat down next to you and you took Laurent from him. You pushed down your nightgown and tried to feed him, but he wasn't hungry. You looked at Enjolras and shrugged as you handed Laurent back. You snuggled back under the covers as Enjolras continued to rock your son, walking around the room. Eventually he quieted down and snuggled into his father's chest. Enjolras sighed in relief as he slowly walked back to the crib. He kissed Laurent's head as he lowered him back into the crib. He slowly crept back to bed and crawled under the covers, pulling you close as he stifled a yawn. You smiled sleepily and kissed his chin.
"You're so great with him," You said softly.
"I'd be lost if you weren't here to help," He tried to deflect the praise.
"That's not true." You scolded. "You'd have dozens of aunts and uncles to help raise him." Enjolras chuckled at the thought.
"Do you think they'll be calm about meeting him?" Enjolras asked. "I don't want Laurent to be terrified." You laughed.
"There's no way they'll be calm." You told him. "But we'll figure it out." You pecked his lips. "Now sleep. Morning comes quickly."
"Yes, ma'am," Enjolras said teasingly before kissing your forehead and drifting off to sleep.
...
Surprisingly, you weren't woken by a baby's cries that morning. Your eyes slowly fluttered open, and you sat up slowly. Laurent was babbling in his crib, waving his pudgy hands and feet in the air. You smiled as you got up, taking care not to wake up your husband. You padded over to the crib. "Well good morning, you," You cooed softly as you lifted your son. He gurgled softly as you slowly walked over to a chair in the corner of the room. You sat down and began to feed Laurent. His eyes slowly fluttered closed as he drank his fill. When he was done, you readjusted your dress and moved Laurent to your shoulder, patting his back softly. You continued to do this until you heard a tiny burp. You smiled at your son as you cradled him in your arms, making faces as he giggled. You were so preoccupied with your son that you didn't notice Enjolras was awake until he crouched down next to you. You smiled at him. "Good morning," You murmured. He didn't say anything, but stretched up to gently brush his lips against your shoulder. Then he turned to Laurent. Laurent shrieked loudly and reached a tiny hand out. Enjolras slipped his index finger into Laurent's palm. His pudgy hand closed around it and Enjolras grinned.
"He's getting strong," He told you.
"Just like his papa," You replied. Enjolras gently ran a hand over Laurent's head, continuing to gaze at his son. "Can you take him? I need to get ready."
Enjolras nodded and took his son into his arms. You stood up and vanished into the bathroom, leaving father and son together. Enjolras took your spot and bounced him in his arms. Laurent shrieked with laughter and Enjolras began to chuckle too. They continued to play until you emerged from the bathroom fully dressed, brushing a lock of hair from your face. "Your turn," You told him. Enjolras looked disappointed but gave you Laurent without complaint. He all but sprinted to the bathroom, eager to return to his family. You put Laurent in a new diaper and clean clothes as Enjolras returned, buttoning up his vest. He put on his boots, and held Laurent as you put on yours. You wrapped a blanket around Laurent to keep out the cold.
"Ready to go?" You nodded. Enjolras opened the door, letting you through. He locked up behind you. He kept an arm around your shoulders as you made your ways towards the café. The streets were crowded, and Enjolras occasionally put an arm out in front of you to protect Laurent rom being jostled by other pedestrians. After slowly weaving your way through the crowds, the café came into view. Enjolras pulled the door open and you walked in. The café was in chaos. Grantaire, Courfeyrac, and Bahorel were singing at the top of their lungs, Eponine, Gavroche and Marius were talking quietly at a table. Joly, Feuilly, and Jehan were trying to get the rest of the café under control. You looked at Enjolras, who glanced back nervously. After a moment, you nodded. He gave you a small smile, before taking a breath.
"Excuse me!" He shouted. The people closest turned to the three of you, and little by little the café quieted until all eyes were on you. "Uh," Enjolras began. "I know you were all there, but we'd like to officially introduce you to Laurent," He paused, and puffed out his chest. "Our son." You smiled at Enjolras. Grantaire dropped down from the table he was standing on and approached the two of you.
"So this is the little troublemaker?" Grantaire asked. You nodded.
"You wanna hold him?" You asked. Grantaire looked apprehensive, but nodded. You carefully laid Laurent in Grantaire's arms, adjusting his grip before stepping back. Grantaire bounced the baby carefully and he smiled nervously.
"Hey there," He murmured. "I'm your Uncle R." Laurent blinked up at the stranger, before his face split into a wide grin.
And then everyone wanted to hold Laurent.
...
The day flew by, and before you knew it, it was time to go home. Bidding your farewells, you took a sleeping Laurent from a reluctant Eponine. Enjolras took off his coat and wrapped it around Laurent. With one last wave (well, shrug in your case), you departed for home. The streets were empty and the night was calm. You walked in silence, with Enjolras' arm wrapped around you once again. Laurent cooed in his sleep and snuggled closer to your chest. You adjusted the blanket and coat and tucked Laurent's arms into his little bundle. Enjolras looked down at his boy, running a hand over the fuzz on his head. Laurent cooed again and Enjolras laughed. He unlocked the front door of your home and led you inside. As he locked the door behind him, you dressed Laurent in his nightclothes. After changing his diaper, you lifted him into your arms and sat down in the chair, rocking him in your arms. You began to hum softly as Enjolras came into the room, dressed and ready for bed. You smiled up at him and he held his arms out. You stood up and walked towards him. He walked right by you and sat in your chair. You raised an eyebrow. He matched your expression and held out his arms again. Your rolled your eyes in amusement but approached nonetheless. Enjolras leaned forward and grabbed you by the waist, gently tugging you forward. He continued to pull you until you were seated in his lap with an arm around your waist, and the other around the baby in your arms. You sat in silence, just watching your son.
"He's beautiful," Enjolras murmured. You smiled, and nodded. "Thank you for giving me him," He kissed your cheek. You leaned your head on his shoulder.
"You have nothing to thank me for, Enjolras." You told him. "This is our family. I didn't give you anything. We made a child. Together." He squeezed you tighter, continuing to gaze at Laurent.
"How did I get so lucky?" You smiled again and tilted his face towards you. You brushed your lips over his and he smiled into the kiss.
"God works in mysterious ways."
