A New Life
Jasmine and Xavier walked to the hospital hallway quietly early that morning with Jasmine constantly biting her bottom lip from nervousness. She was going to see Jake being unable to walk and depressed, was she ready for this? Xavier took slower steps with Jasmine when they got closer to the hospital room. He turns to his wife and grips her shoulder softly, looking into her eyes,
“If you don’t want to go in there its fine…” He said softly but she just take a deep inhale and bit the inside of her bottom lip,
“Let’s go.” She takes Xavier’s hand and turned towards the door knob turning the handle to encounter Jake sitting on the bed sitting upright with Taylor next to him, talking to her boyfriend.
“Today the weather is pretty nice, you want to go outside?” Taylor questions but Jake just kept quiet like he did the past few hours. He felt so useless now. Nothing can be done to help him. Without these pair of legs, he’s basically a disabled person who can’t do anything. Xavier squeezed Jasmine’s hand and took in a deep breath walking closer to his brother who didn’t bother looking up to see who it was.
“Jake…” Xavier said dryly. “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.” He confessed making Jake advert his eyes from the white wall to his brothers pale face that looks so sad. “If I hadn’t checked the car before handing it over to you then you wouldn’t be like this.” Xavier looks down at the ground and Jasmine held onto her husbands hand tighter almost wanting to pull him into a hug but before she could do that, Jake reached out his hand to Xavier’s and grabbed his wrist.
“I’m glad that you didn’t test out the car.” Jake swallowed; his throat was dry from not having any liquid in his body for twenty four hours. Xavier shot his head up when he heard what Jake was saying. Did his brother go crazy from car crash? Why was he glad?
“No, wh-”
“Let me finish.” Jake replied weakly, staring at Xavier’s brown eyes that mirror his.
“I will go fill up a cup of water.” Taylor decides to exit the room to give the brothers space, and Jasmine stood close to her husband listening intently.
“If you were the one to test out the car, then you would be the one sitting here right now.” Jake blinked back tears. He was yet sad about his condition but happy that Xavier wasn’t the one in his spot. “You have Jasmine and the newborn to take care of.” Jake finally smiles. It felt so good for him to smile again; it was as if he hadn’t smiled in ages.
“Jake…” Jasmine walks over to the other side of the bed and gave him a hug from the side. She squeezed him tight in her arms. She really loves him as a brother; he was such a sweet guy. He was always trying to always manage that smile in whatever condition he was in. Jake kept the smile plastered on his face and put his hand up to Jasmines arm and dug his head in her arm. Xavier joined in with the hug and wrapped his arms around his brother from the other side and touched heads with Jake as he dug his heads in both their arms.
“It’s different now…” Jake sniffs, feeling a lump in his throat. He could feel a part of him lost and dead. He wasn’t normal anymore. Some of the things he did before couldn’t be accomplished on a wheel chair.
“Let it all out.” Jasmine assures, wanting him to only feel better. Theres nothing else she could do now.
“I can’t be a surgeon anymore. I can’t play sports anymore. I can’t save lives. I can’t do the things normal people can!” Jake sobbed louder making Jasmine’s heart break and she could feel her own eyes tear up. Xavier grasped Jake in a tighter embrace if that was even possible. He has never seen Jake so upset before. Never in his whole life has Jake been so down on himself in front of Xavier which broke his heart even more. Even when their mom died he even managed to cope with it. Xavier closed his eyes and felt a tear trickle down his hot cheek. Jake was his only brother and the one he love the most.
