LYNNETTE & LYNN
The sky was a gloomy grey, casting a forlorn atmosphere all around the town. The few trees that were littered around the mansion's path were bare and looked like gnarly hands coming out of the earth to grab anyone who might wander across the path. It was in this kind of day, or rather evening, that Lynn and Lynnette had found their mother, lying on the bed, with a white face and a still heart.
"Ma! Ma!" Lynnette shook her mother as Lynn stood beside her, her body rigid and her face stricken. The two sisters' appearance and character were of polar opposites. While Lynnette, the elder one of eighteen, had shoulder-length blonde hair and striking blue eyes, Lynn had waist-length ebony hair that was as straight as stick and dark eyes which looked right through you. Even at fourteen years she seemed to have the maturity of an adult.
Lynette knelt down and hugged her mother's body. Her sister too slumped down and let her head lean on Lynette's shoulders. By now, the older one had started sobbing wildly, trying to wake her mother by shaking her. She knew it was of no use but she still hoped that whatever angel that had taken her mother's life away would bring it back. Lynn, though, stayed frozen.
The room's door then opened, to reveal their father standing there and watching everything calmly. Lynette's head turned around swiftly. "YOU!" she screeched. "What did you do to her? WHAT?" She stood up straight and began moving towards her father.
He stood there silently; then gave the smallest of smiles. Lynette flew onto him. She started thumping his chest with her fists wanting to give him as much pain as she could when four orderlies in white entered the room. Lynette turned her attention towards them. "You can't take her away!" she shouted. She could not move forwards though. Her father had grabbed her under her arms. She struggled and kicked about trying to free herself and watched helplessly at her sister who was now lying on the floor as if she were sleeping and at her mother whom the orderlies picked up and carried away in a stretcher.
Her father let go of her and she collapsed into a heap. It was a few minutes after he had left tha she crawled towards Lynn. "Lynn baby," she said softly. Lynn did not respond. Her eyes were fixated on a spot on the floor and her body was trembling mildly.
"Lynn baby, look at me." Lynette stroked her sister's face. She slowly turned around, her eyes filled with a million emotions.
"I'm scared, Ly. I need her back," she said. "I'm so, so scared," she whispered.
Lynnette wiped her tears away. "We'll be okay," she whispered back. She brushed Lynn's forehead to calm her down. Slowly, both of them got up and trudged towards their room. They got into their bed and pulled the covers up to their chin hoping it formed a protection around them. Beneath the covers both of them linked their arms tightly and stared at each other. The air outside was howling and the temperature dropped steadily.
"I will take care of you. I will never let anyone hurt you," Lynette promised Lynn. A single tear escaped Lynn's eyes as she snuggled closer to her sister.
Lightining struck and thunder was heard. The heavens then fell open as if to drown the entire town in misery too.
*********
Within two days, word had gotten around town that Rebecca, Mr.Preston's wife, had died. The post mortem report stated that she had died from an overdose of sleeping pills. Nobody questioned why she would want to kill herself. She was an introvert, barely speaking to anyone when alive thus everyone assumed that she had certain problems which she never revealed. The funeral was a solemn affair. Everyone pitied the girls and their father wondering how he was going to take care of them.
