Ludwig kept glancing at the time on the monitor screen. Two hours left until the end of his shift.

He stretched and smoothed back a few stray blonde hairs on his head that had dared to stick up since this morning.

The phone rang and he snapped to attention before his hand darted out to lift the receiver and bring it to his ear.

"911, what is your emergency?" he asked, hearing the device click as their conversation was recorded.

A panicked whimper was heard as whoever was on the other end tried to pull themselves together.

"Sir, please try to calm down and state your emergency so that I may help you." Ludwig began, his voice thick with his heavy German accent. He listened intently for the others voice.

"You can't help me." The voice was Italian, and the man that it belonged to sounded no older than Ludwig himself.

The German's blue eyes narrowed.

"Sir, if you could please tell me your name and explain to me your problem then I'm sure that I can help you."

"My name is Feliciano," the Italian began, "and tonight is my anniversary."

Ludwig visibly relaxed, this was just some idiot wasting his time.

"Look, sir, if you're scared of your wife then you were right. I can't help you." He sighed, knowing that he was definitely no help when it came to women. "I suggest you try phoning someone else."

"No!" Feliciano shouted, voice still panic stricken, and Ludwig winced as the sound shot straight through his head. "That's not the problem! I don't even have a wife!" The Italian continued to blubber.

"Then what is it?" Ludwig questioned, starting to become slightly irritated with the Italian.

The line was silent, the man had perhaps hung up? Ludwig was unsure.

"Tonight," came the voice of Feliciano, now shockingly calm and seeming to bear an eerie undertone, "is the anniversary of my suicide."

Ludwig's face paled, sweat trickling down his face.

The line went dead...
