Prologue
(Two Years Ago)
The distant sensation of burning was raw and powerful as it was unforgiving. Somebody was screaming and it took her a moment to realize that it was herself who was crying out in pure agony. She writhed uselessly against the chains binding her to the table, watching in horror as a man in a white lab coat brought the branding tool up to her neck, his smile cruel and a bit mad.
"Don't worry my dear," He said, and gave her cheek an almost affectionate pat. "This will only sting for a little while."
"You're...You're insane!" She gasped. He'd already marked her ankle and now he was going for her throat? She screamed again as the burning metal neared her skin, kicking her feet in a foolish attempt to try and escape. "Stay away from me!"
"I'm afraid that isn't an option." Said a voice behind the man in white. A younger boy was standing behind him with his hands collapsed together behind his back. He was handsome, with sharp yet cold features. Cobalt blue eyes scanned over her body-which was only covered in a flimsy silk tank top and cotton pajama bottoms- assessing every feature and committing it to memory. "You see, we happened to have found some very important information on your past, as well as something interesting," he licked his lips. "in your bloodline."
The man in the lab coat chuckled lowly. "Something very interesting indeed."
He agreed and lifted the metal back to the skin of her neck. "Now sit still, we can't have someone mistaking you now can we?"
"Well, well, well, what do we have here? Two fully grown men and a little girl chained to a bed?" A voice tsked, echoing around the room from what seemed like nowhere and then everywhere. "Let alone utterly defenseless in her night clothes. How pitiful."
"Who's there?!" Demanded the man with azure eyes, wildly turning in a full three-sixty, searching for the source of the disembodied voice. His fingers curled into fists. "Where are you! Show yourself."
With a laugh, someone appeared out of the shadows, dark hair curling over golden eyes, a mischievous grin curling the corner of his mouth upward. He was dressed in dark gear composed of a black T-shirt, jeans, boots, and a weapons belt wrapped low at the waist. The girl gawked at his immeasurable beauty. Was he here...to save her? She thought a bit wildly. Her heart thudded painfully against her chest at the mere thought.
Another voice chimed in, low and dark, laced with sarcasm. "How about we make this a bit more even?"
"I couldn't agree with you more, little brother." Said the boy with the golden eyes. He stepped forward threateningly and whipped out a blade with incredible grace, lowering it to one mans throat. Cobalt blue eyes looked back at his defiantly, even with a blade at his throat, he spoke with cold calm.
"You honestly can't think that you'll win," A cruel smile lifted the corner of his lips, defiant. "We have a building full of men armed with weapons. They'll kill you."
Golden eye boy smiled darkly, pressing the dagger deeper into the mans neck so that drops of scarlet spilled down and stained the collar of the other mans sweater. "What makes you think that you'll be able to warn them before we escape? I could kill you before you even hit the panic button."
The man with cobalt blue eyes flinched, hand poised above his jean pocket. "They'll come." He said, but doubt flashed through his features, disappearing so fast that the girl almost thought that she'd imagined it.
The man in the lab coat inched backwards, but the barrel of a gun pressed into the side of his head and he froze, eyes widening in horror. He dropped the branding tool and it clattered to the ground with a painful clang.
"Going somewhere?" Asked the dark voice, now given a face. He looked exactly like the other boy, except his eyes were silver and his hair was white. It was possible that they were twins, no doubt brothers.
The boy with the golden eyes looked up at his brother and rose a brow in question. "Really, Alex? Really? Couldn't you go for something more subtle and a little more quiet? I'd rather not anybody come rushing in hear if they hear a gunshot."
Alyec, the boy with white hair, rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Hey, at least I didn't do like last time and bring a bomb. So," He pressed the gun harder into the lab coat guys' head and slowly drew back the trigger. "how bout it, Damon? Why don't we just kill these guys right here?"
Damon's golden eyes flashed with amusement, a faint smile touching his beautiful face. "We could, but then again, that would ruin all of the fun." His gaze flickered to the girl sitting on the table, still chained and helpless. He sighed, "Plus, she's here."
"And she would like to get out of these chains, thank you very much." Snapped the girl. She was through with listening to their useless chatter. "And I have a name you know."
Alyec and Damon exchanged a look before Damon shrugged, drew back his blade and plunged it into the mans chest. His blue eyes flew wide, before slowly closing as he dropped to the ground with a thud, those same azure losing their light. Disgusted, Damon stepped over the body and moved to work on the girls chains while Alex knocked the guy in the lab coat either out cold or just plain killed him. The girl didn't bother to find out as Damon released her from captivity and carefully picked her up, cradling her to his chest like he would a child.
One glace at Alyec and the other boy nodded before disappearing out the only entrance. She glanced up at Damon with a inquiring look. "Who are you anyway?"
Damon peered down and a slow smile found its way along his mouth.
"You could call me a friend." He said, before disappearing with her into the shadows.
