“Happy Valentine’s Day,” a colleague greeted me. It really startled me because I am busy thinking of other things.
Yeah, it’s February 14, 2012!
As a reply I smiled sweetly at her. “Are you going home early to spend this day with your family?” I managed to ask.
She nodded. “Yes. It’s been a while since I last spent special moments with them.” She tapped my shoulder. “I’ll go now. Take a rest, Doctor Mendoza.”
Yes I am a doctor and I wondered why a heart is used to symbolize love/Valentine’s day, when in fact it’s our hypothalamus which controls our emotion, which further came from our cerebrum.
Complications of things really make me go crazy.
Anyway, today is Valentine’s Day. I have to go home to my family in the province. I have just passed the board exam of my M.D. in Internal Organs. I’m turning twenty- eight years old now.
“Oh! It’s raining again. Shouldn’t the heaven be happy that another day has come?” I asked to myself while driving the crosswind my parents have given me as a graduation gift.
Suddenly a loud tire screech was heard.
“Oh my!” I stepped hard on my car’s brake. I went to the car in front of mine. “Hey! Are you okay?” I knocked at the car’s window. It powered down. “Mister, are you okay?” I asked, not realizing the rain soaking my dress.
“Silly! Can’t you feel it’s raining?!” he scolded instead. There’s a blood on his left side forehead.
“You are bleeding…” I whispered. “Let’s go to the hospital and get cured.”
“This is just a scratch. Please get on your car and get off my way,” he insisted.
“But sir, I don’t leave patients unattended,” I gently said. What the heck! I haven’t started my work yet I’m about to kill a person.
“Please miss, I have to go home, my family is waiting for me.” He gave a calling card. “Call me up tonight and bother me ‘til dawn if you wish.” He closed the car’s window.
My eyes were pinned on his car while he’s reversing his direction. Is he really okay? Well, it’s not my fault. After all he assured it is okay. I looked at his calling card…”What? Stars Construction Firm?” I exclaimed. “A-and who? The Chief Executive Officer?” oh no! The letters were clearly written: ENGR. Tyrone Santander. “I must be really crazy!” I went to my car and dried myself a little then I drove again. I went to my unit to change and get some clothes before I’ll go home.
It was never this thrilling when those days passed me by. It’s as if I was cursed to a boring life then. “Tyrone Santander?” I whispered when I remember his name. “Please, I’ll just face it when I’m back.”
