———————————————————————
I look around the tiny empty room I lived in since I was 9. It had a kitchen with a tiny TV and little fridge and stove, and a room big enough to fit a single bed and a dresser. I lived here all alone since I was 9. So many memories.
I packed my backpack and put my harp in its case. It was a harp that was smaller than the average harp. It could shrink at grow. It's main size was the size of a cello. On the back carved into the wood it said
"From Taleo Shoi"
My name is Y/n Shoi. I'm going to become a hunter. I always believed this man was my dad or brother. They were all killed before I could meet them. I didn't know them.
I polished my duel silver swords one last time before I put them back in their sheaths. I hooked the sheaths up to my waist. I looked in the full length mirror.
My h/c, h/l hung down. My purple eyes glowing.
Purple eyes were incredibly rare. You either came from one of two races. The Insomtions or the Deintors. Both were clans that had killers instincts and fought for life. I had only seen someone with my eye color once.
I have reasons to believe that I am a Deintor. Back when the world was young around 3000 years old, it began to change. Powers appeared and land changed. The Deintors came from a land named "Australia". They kept their accents as they lived. Soon all their children would have the accent too, they didn't need to be taught it. After that, those who were born into the Deintor clan would never lose the accent. No matter what. I have always talked with that accent and couldn't lose it, no matter what. Just like the clan.
They also say that the Deintors clan had powers. I have powers too, so I must be a Deintors.
My powers included my swords. If I licked the blade of the swords I became much more powerful. I could sense my enemies and cut through them like pudding. This was very useful while hunting or being hunted.
My other power included my harp.
I could use my harp to control those with a weak mind. I could use it to sway or confuse strong minds. I often played it to old Spanish or Italian tunes. As if they were used in a royal court. I loved harp. It could express my feelings as I don't talk much. Not since the Dragonflies died.
I took a look in the mirror. If I was Deintor I was the spitting image of one.
My skin was as pale as usual. I wore a sleeveless gray shirt and black cargo pants. I was strong and you could see the muscles I trained for.
Guys tended to stay away from me due to my competitiveness. I didn't have a big bust. My chest is the same as a 12yo. I never cared too much. On my upper arm I have a dragonfly tattoo the size of my hand.
When I was 10 I joined a group of smugglers so I could eat and pay rent on the tiny house I lived in. We were called "The Dragonflies". We all had the tattoo. One night everyone went to get a valuable gem. They were all killed that night. I lost the closest thing to a family I had ever had.
I can never forget the preyed screams. To live I hid under the dead body of a man who had practically raised me. I watched my dad die. Then I hid under his dead body. The smell of blood followed me for months after that. I woke up in a cold sweat to hear their inhuman screams.
I wish I could've saved them.
There was a man named Gio there. He had long dark pink dreadlocks, tan skin, and warm eyes. He was strong and a master in Nen. He was like my father. He would pick me up from school, we would hang out, he even tried to adopt me. He died before the forms arrived to the adoption office.
Gio taught me how to stalk, how to move without noise, he taught me properties of Nen. He taught me how to survive. I wouldn't have made it this far without him.
He used to sing in his deep voice as I played harp. He would visit my house everyday and have dinner with me. We would then watch TV, train together, he would teach me Latin, or play games.
On my 14 birthday he gave me two black silver bands that went around my wrists. He taught me to expand and contract them with Nen energy. He said I was a specialist.
I put both the black bands on my wrists. I would never forgot Gio. My makeshift dad. I miss him.
I stepped into the sun and locked the door behind me. My backpack was small but it carried everything I needed. My swords lay in their sheaths. My harp case was in one hand.
I need to make it to the port. I wondered how many hunters wanted to join this year. Guess I'll find out.
I walked along the sunny streets of Wale Island. I could sense a storm in the far distance. It wouldn't hit until we were on the boat.
"Y/N WAIT" I heard a man yell.
A chubby short man ran up to me. He was the bartender at Salty Paws. I ran errands for him for extra money. I also preformed harp at his bar. I could control human emotions so I played song to make people happy. He dropped a small envelope into my hand.
"I know you're going to take the Hunter Exam. So I thought I would give you a little bonus for this weeks work" He told me.
I hugged him. He tried to help me out when Gio passed. He was Gio's best friend after all. He hired me and gave me left over food from the kitchen.
"Thank you Tio Sama" I told him.
He smiled.
"Come back in one piece. You're the only one who can lift 300 pounds on beer"
"I will, and I'll come back with a Hunters License" I promised him.
His wife came running out of the bar too.
"Take this, I know you'll get hungry on the ship" She said as she pressed a brown paper bag into my hand. She smiled then walked back into the bar.
"Take care of yourself" he reminded me.
"I will"
He wished me good luck and I continued on my way. Every shady guy on this island knew me. The strong fighter.
The Dragonfly
That reminds me. I have to do something before I leave. I stopped by a cemetery. I walked amongst the tombstones stopping at a certain one. It was about three years since this had been here.
Gio Talwia
Devoted trader, friend, boyfriend, leader, and makeshift father.
My makeshift father.
I almost broke into tears. That night when I realized that he died I almost broke. I had never felt something that painful. Not when I was impaled by an icicle. Not when my girlfriend Mia died. When Gio died it hurt more than anything I've ever felt. Like I lost part of me too.
"I'll make you proud dad" I whispered.
I kneeled down and pressed my forehead against the cool stone. I wished I could bring him back. He didn't deserve this. I wish I could've stopped this.
But I couldn't.
He's gone
And never coming back.
I looked around. 24 of these graves belong to the Dragonflies. This is where all of them were buried. I visited each one everyday. Today was special. This was especially so I could talk to my father figure.
I did the Dragonfly salute. A swift movement from your neck to your eyes with three fingers
"Dragonfly" I whispered.
I could almost here the rest of the group echo the word back.
Dragonfly.
I sat up and reached into my bag. I pulled out a single white rose.
Those were always Gio's favorite flower. He said he loved all the meanings and potentials of a single white flower. He would paint them bright colors or paint intricate designs on them. He could've become in artist if he wanted to. He loved turning a blank canvas into art. He was a Hunter too, he was an Beauty Hunter.
They hunt for beauty in simple things, such as forests, flowers, and rocks. He loved all things beautiful. He loved to make things beautiful.
I laid a single white rose on the grave. He would've loved to make it art. I had to leave before I started crying. I stood up and left the cemetery.
I took one last good look at the street I lived on and the cemetery I cried in. I felt all my memories wrap around me. I took one last look at the cemetery of Dragonflies. I will become Hunter. For their sake and mine.
I held those words as I continued my journey to the port. I lived far away from the port. I had no car not bike or skates. So I ran.
I felt the feeling of my feet pump under me. I enjoyed running. It was one of the trainings Gio put me through. 50 kilometer runs. Those sound horrible, but Gio ran beside me every time everyday. He made it fun.
I made it to the port. As I waited I got words of advice and goodbyes from shady people. I know all of them. I either body guarded, smuggled, or fought for them. They treated me as one of their top agents.
I went up to a group of them.
"What's the party about?" I asked.
"You" One answered.
"We're here to see you off, after all you've done for us" Another chimed in.
For a group of shady people they had kind souls for those they cared for. Even the toughest one there saluted me as I made eye contact. They began to help me to see if I was ready.
Some slipped me coins, and some slipped knives to me while I waited for the ship. Those were my people. A group of backstreets looking out for each other.
The ship pulled into the harbor. I gave one final salute to the men and women that hired me, then got in line for the ship. A few people going on the ship to the Hunter Exams noticed me.
I noticed a few too.
•A tall man with dragon tattoos
•A man with two computers in his hands
•A man who was playing with syringes
These were called "Three Psychos". They were a group of three men who killed for money and pleasure. The tall man had physical strength, the computer man had brains, and the syringe guy had no empathy to get in the way.
Or that's what they told people. They're a group of wannabe assassins. I had beat them several times. Except I was in the Dragonfly gear so they assumed it was another member.
They're all pussies anyways. They're really weak. They go after low level fighters to make themselves happy.
"Dragonfly"
I turned around. Who whispered that. The three psychos were snorting laughter. Those pricks. I stepped out of line and to them.
"What'd you doin' mate" I spat.
The tall one laughed.
"Don't get on that boat, or you'll end up like the rest of your Dragonflies" He smirked.
I felt my blood boil. He hit a nerve there.
"And now, I'll end you" He said.
I stepped back then wound up a punch. I punched him in the jaw, sending him back into a wall. The wall cracked when he hit it. As if it were made of plaster.
The other two scattered.
Like rats running back to the sewers I thought to myself.
"Nice try bloke" I said while walking back to the line.
Never insult The Dragonflies
A few people watched that. Some were amazed, some knew me and didn't consider it a big deal. I didn't.
Those bastards thought they were tough shit. Well I've seen hell in my lifetime. They are nothing. They didn't try to follow me. I knew they wouldn't.
Wannabes I thought to myself.
I felt eyes on me as I walked around the ships deck. Some eyed my sword. I looked at my harp case and willed it to shrink the the size of a ukulele. I could put in in my bag now.
Despite people watching me no one approached me. Makes sense. I just punched a guy into a wall. Who wants to talk to that. No one here obviously.
I watched as a few people filtered in late. A few men and a young boy with spiky black hair and big brown eyes. He looked so excited. He looked quite young. This might be unsafe for him.
Well, not my problem. He might actually have skills to make it through. I guess I'll see. I waited for the ship to start moving. Finally it did. I stared at the blue water moving beneath the ship.
I took a few moments to think to myself.
No one can stop me
I'll become a Hunter
No matter what
I felt the salty air hit my face.
I promise Gio ♥️
