Clenching my palm to my mouth i try to mask my heavy breathing whilst silently tiptoeing across the dark oak flooring to the only escape I can find. It's a small window but I'm hoping I'll be able to squeeze. I can hear my heart pounding in my chest, I just prey he doesn't sense it. If I get caught fleeing, he will kill me. The alpha does not react kindly to those who betray him. Especially those promised to him.
It's dark out, almost midnight. This is my last chance before my eighteenth birthday to flee to the south coast to try and join a new pack, a pack that will protect me.
I glance at the clock on the wall. Eleven forty-seven. I don't have much time.
If I don't leave now it will be too late and the alphas tradition on mating with a pure she-wolf on their eighteenth birthday, whom was given to him as a prize of succeeding a previous alpha will begin.
I was marked by Maka the last alpha to be kept for this exact reason. Traditions here on in the east coast are different to other packs across the country. They're are strict, with strict consequences.
Since I hit wolf maturity on my sixteenth birthday I was marked as sacred so that when mating season came around, the alpha would have a prize for anyone who dared to challenge him and win.I sniff the air to see if the coast is clear, all I can scent is the guards at the bedroom door. The muffled voices suggests they are distracted, no doubt preparing for the new alpha to arrive. Reaching for the paint rusted window handle I begin to tremble, this is it. Only one other pure has managed to escape and that was ten years ago, her story has been forbidden to tell and deemed a myth. I remember her, she was no myth.
The window squeaks from is locked position as I turn the handle. The voices from outside the room fade and heavy footsteps fill the void.
The alpha.
Panic sets in and being quiet is no longer an option, I scramble to escape the window. I manage to squeeze my upper torso out of the small frame but struggle to get my hips past. The bedroom door flies open with such force there's no doubting who it is. "Maija." The sounds of him speaking my name makes the hair split through my skin and stand on my arm. "You will get back in this room right now." The low voice is almost a growl and reeks of power.
I don't give up. The rest of my body continues turning with its primal instinct to survive. My nails agonisingly shift into sharp claws and scratch at the brick on the opposite side with each pull to free myself.
The alpha growls loudly as he throws himself across the room to the window. I feel the excruciating pain searing through my leg moments later. I gather every ounce of strength I have to kick him off, he's a newly awarded alpha meaning he won't have his full strength yet. As I buck him off with everything I have left in me my body shifts completely from an olive skinned brunette to a white furr coat she-wolf. The shift allows me to flee from the window.I land with a thud onto the pavement below me, I pine in pain but have no time to waste and begin sprint as fast as my injured body possibly can through the Forrest. I look back as the howl of the alpha gathering his elite pack members to hunt me down fills the air.
There I see him.
Full of mating hazed rage.
Shifting into the black coated wolf at the window I had just escaped.
