“Kiera, I have high expectations for you this year. It’s a disappointment to our family that you didn’t get a full four year scholarship.”
My mother touches my hair and gives me a stern look. Her brown eyes have always been so harsh. I wrinkle my nose in nervousness, all these words, all these lectures are pushed down on me daily but all I can think about right now in this moment is being free from this guilt I feel when I look into my mother’s stone cold eyes.
I got out of my dad’s old rusty car and brushed the dust from my table cloth looking skirt- at least thats what ‘they’ call it.
I get a few snickers from the guys sitting by a nearby tree, they whistle at me, although i know this wasn’t as compliment. I quickly fix my hair, and pull my skirt up. I take a deep breath and take a look around the place I will be spending the next four years of my life trying to make a name for myself.
I didn’t expect college to be this way, i thought it would be different. I’m used to all the stares but the idea of change is unsettling.
My mother doesn’t help me with the boxes, as expected. She frowns at the place, shaking her head slightly side to side.
“I expected better” She murmurs under her breath.
I walked into the room and come across a sign which reads “incoming freshers! Welcome to Welcome Week”
She looks around the room filled with a diverse bunch. Goths, geeks, nerds, jocks, she gives one of her disapproving looks again.
As soon as I see the expression on her face, I know what's coming next.
“ Please don’t mingle with any of these, these time wasters. No partying. No going out. Only studying, thats the only reason you’re here” I recite in my head along with my mother’s words.
I can feel someone looking at me. I turn around and there he is, a dark haired mysterious looking boy from across the room staring straight into my green eyes. With a small gasp I realize that he just heard everything. For a few seconds I’m frozen in a trance as his green eyes which pierce right through me.
We made eye contact even though my mother is still blabbering about those rules of hers, and all of a sudden I hear a scream from across the room.
“ Dylan, Dylan come here,” a barbie lookalike calls from across the room, she twirls her bleached hair she definitely is into him. No chance here. What was I thinking? For a second i allowed myself to believe that i might even have shot with him. Look at him, and look at me.
But the next thing you know I’m falling for him. Literally.
