The air condiioning in th small office reminded her much of winter. Even in the restraints she felt a sense of calmness as the old machine rattled above her in the dim red lights. She could not help but to feel a bit strange being inside a building of concrete again, for it has been years since she had seen a chair more so than to sit in one. She looked around with wide eyes and thought to herself that the place could use a bit of greenery, for only a sturdy looking chaired stared back at her beyond the desk and a grandfather clock above the metal entrance door. In a flash the lights went bright white and she tensed; clenching her shackled wrists as well as her fangs. The door creaked open and a tall black woman entered wearing a gray camo uniform and a blue cap. She closed the door and broke into tears as she strolled over to her and unlocked her handcuffs.

"My baby," she whispered; collapsing against Cynthia and wrapping her arms around her, "I'm sorry for everything."

Cynthia felt nothing but rage and heavy confusion, realizing it was her mother who was the head of the coup that could have killed her on that night.

"Do any of them know what you are?" Cynthia asked; tight lipped.

"Not right now baby girl, just let me look at you," she replied steping back and clasping her fingers across her stomach"Oh how much you've grown," she said, taking her in.

Cynthia rose to her feet and halted, feeling the stitches where she had been shot in the shoulder. She swallowed her grief and calmly said" I need to understand something."

"Anything," the woman said as her dark eyes glistened in the ceiling light, sparkling as a tear trickled down her left cheek.

"How? How are you alive? How - is this possible? They killed you, I saw them burn your body by our cabin," she cleched the powerful fangs within her jaws and stared at the woman she had once known in suspicion.

"The humans have a power that you may never understand Cynthia. They brought me back with the very machines that we have so despised over the years."

"Is that why you are working for them? Do ou feel nothing for our people? Have you forgotten what they did to you? Did to us?" she brought her hand to her chest in sheer patriotic fashion and widened her eyes as the filled red.

"I accepted their offer to ensure my survival. There is no vampire in history that has ever taken on a human army by themselves that has ever lived to speak of it. I needed the help of another, I need yor help Cynthia," she fell to her knees "I know I have killed many of our own and I have weakened our cause, but if you choose not to help me, neither of us will ever leave this damned place," she looked up at her daughter with savage grief.

Cynthia took a step back and investigated the office as her mother rose to her feet and folded her arms with a face of deep regret; looking at the strong young woman who at one time could not be any closer to her. "Mother," she said and sighed "Where are we?"
