"D-Dani, c'mon! It's *tic* only a fr-freshmen p-party! I don't n-need to *tic* get all glammed up f-for *tic* nobody," I protested as she started to apply eyeliner to finish the look she was currently doing on me.
"It may only be a freshmen party, but this is the first time you were able to find a hot guy. You haven't seen anyone since what happened with Sean. It's time for you to get back out there, Mari!"
My chest got tighter at the mention of my abusive ex boyfriend's name, but I pushed past it and put on a fake smile instead. I didn't want Danielle to know she upset me.
"I-I know. I st-still *tic* think th-this is a little *tic* much. I *tic* don't w-want to look like a g-gremlin at the end of the ni-
ght," I joked."It'll be worth it. Trust me." She sent me a quick smile.
Finally after putting on some lipgloss, we were ready to leave. I looked in the mirror one last time and smiled to myself. I really did look hot. Like really hot. There's no doubt in my mind that I'll get someone's attention tonight.

Instant regret washed over me as we walked into the house the party was being held at. There were couples sucking each other's faces off, people throwing up from being too intoxicated, music so loud I could barely hear my own thoughts, and to top it all off, horny freshmen guys everywhere you looked.Danielle was pulled away from me almost instantly by a group of her friends, leaving me alone.
I was diagnosed with tourette syndrome at a young age which made it almost impossible for me to make friends. I was bullied throughout elementary, and eventually I had to become homeschooled. To make matters worse, this past year I was in a really bad accident which left me with a permanent stutter. Danielle was the only person who wasn't afraid to talk to me, but she has friends of her own. I can't keep her all to myself.
I decided to get a drink in hopes that I could get drunk enough to forget everything that was going on. As I was about to take a sip, I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.
"Hey. I-I wouldn't *tic* Dr-drink that if-if *tic* I were *tic* y-you."
I turned around to face the person who had spoke and was met with the most beautiful brown eyes I'd ever seen.
"I-I'm pretty *tic* s-sure I saw s-someone slip s-something in your c-cup," he stated, clearly concerned. I looked into my cup and saw something fizzing at the bottom.
"Sh-shit," I mumbled, throwing the cup away.
"Th-thank *tic* you..." I paused, searching for a name.
"T-Toby."
Just as his name left his mouth, someone shouted from across the room at the two of us.
"LOOK! THE TWO FREAKS LIKE EACH OTHER! HOW SWEET! MAYBE NOW THEY'LL LEAVE THE REST OF THE POPULATION ALONE!"
I just rolled my eyes and ignored him.
"H-hey, do you *tic* maybe w-wanna come over t-to my *tic* house? This p-party's kinda *tic* l-lame anyway," I asked, unsure of his response.
"h-honestly, yes. *tic* I-I've n-never met anyone wh-who both tics a-and stut-ters. I-I'de l-love *tic*to get to kn-know you," he answered with clear difficulty.
"okay... l-lets go *tic* then. I just g-gotta get *tic* my fr-friend first."
I pushed past the crowd of inebriated teens only to find the very person I was looking for, sucking face with a senior.
"Dani. I-I'm going *tic* h-home. Y-youre wel-come *tic* to c-come with," I stuttered.
Slurring her words, Dani gave a very quick reply: "Nah I'm good."
"Suit y-yourself."
