A Story After a Story: A Fault In Our Stars Fanfic

Chapter 20

Jess's POV:

Today is the day Monica arrives! I am so excited, it has been a week since my mom came home from the hospital, and it is the beginning of March. Gus and I have been enjoying a Leo free, Dan free week of school and he, Adelyn, and I have done a lot together lately. Life is good.

Friday afternoon and I guess I have nothing to do but wait for Monica. My phone buzzes in my back pocket and I pull it out and read my text from Gus.

'Hey Jess! Would you mind if I brought my friend Isaac over to hang out for the afternoon? I know your friend is coming over, but I haven't seen him in a while and I feel bad.'

I text back a quick 'Sure no problem!' before the doorbell rings. I run and fling it open to reveal Monica standing before me. We both squeal in excitement before wrapping each other in a tight hug.

"Monica it's been so long I missed you so much!" I say excitedly.

"Aww Jess, I missed you to! I can't wait to hang out with you this weekend!" she says with a big smile.

Right then, the door swang open and Gus and who I'm assuming is his friend Isaac enter the house. Isaac is blind so he doesn't react quite like Gus and Monica do, but the two of them stare at each other with wide eyes and an open mouth. Finally, both of their expressions turn to anger.

"Monica." Gus growls.

"Augustus." Monica harshly says back.

Before anything can escalate to be any worse, I grab Gus's arm and pull him into the living room.

"What is going on?" I ask him.

"Monica used to live here in the area, and she dated Isaac. When Isaac had his eye removed, Monica broke up wih him and broke his heart. He ended up smashing all of my basketball trophies, and we may have egged her car." he tells me.

I almost laugh at the 'egging her car' part, but other than that I am shocked.

"Gus, I am so sorry, I wouldn't have invited her if I had known this. I don't know what to do..."

"Just have your weekend with her, and I will try to keep Isaac away, he doesn't need to know she is here."

We head back to the front door, and Isaac and Monica are standing far away from each other dead silent.

"Well Isaac, I think we should go and let Jess and her friend spend some time together."

I smile at him and rub my forehead before closing the door behind them.

"Why didn't you tell me any of this?"

"I'm sorry, the last people I was expecting to see were my ex-boyfriend and his attrac- I mean best friend." she blushes.

"Ooook then. Want to go to see that new movie If I Stay? I heard it is really good, and I have been dying to go see it!" I say to her.

So, despite the surprise on Friday afternoon, I had a pretty good weekend with Monica. The only downside was that I didn't get to see much of Gus. It is Sunday afternoon, and I had to run out and pick up some Tylenol for my mother. I don't know why she couldn't do it, especially since she knew Monica was here...

I pull up to the house and grab the Walmart bag out of the passenger seat before heading in.

"Anyone home?" I call out before walking in the living room. 

An icy feeling fills my stomach and my words are caught in my throat. 

Why are Monica and Gus making out in my living room? Maybe it isn't Gus's fault, but he sure doesn't look like he is trying to stop it.

I clear my throat and Gus pushes Monica off of him with wide eyes.

"Jess, it isn't my fault, Monica kissed me, I, I-" he stutters before I cut him off.

"Monica, just go. I thought you were my friend."

"I- I didn't know you two were dating."

"Go!" I pretty much shout at her.

Once she finally leaves, I turn to Gus.

"I thought you didn't want to be near her. Why are you even here in the first place? You know what, I don't even care anymore. I trusted you! Just go." I say to him.

He doesn't say anything until he gets to the door.

"I'm sorry Jess, it wasn't my fault." he says with a sad look and then leaves.

My life just went from being perfect to everything falling apart, but I guess that is just life right?
