STAGE I: GET A LIFE.
Hello, world. My name is Carmelle Harper. I’m 19 years old. And right now, I am not sure what i’m doing. My best friend Melinda and I just got dumped from Nihon University. That’s right, we were students in Japan. But then a bunch of stupid stuff happened. You see, I used to have this super cute awesome boyfriend back when I was a student. Now, I hate boys and I don’t ever want to have a boyfriend again for my own sanity. (Within the past 68 hours, things have changed.) And believe me when I say I turned into a monster when he dumped me. You see, I acted like a super saiyan when that happened, and I tore apart everything in my path. Next thing I know, I collect all of my money (which is not much) and Melinda, then decide that I don’t want to do economics anymore. Yeah, it turns out that we both weren’t having much fun there. But how we ended up in Seoul, Korea? You see, I didn’t move just because of my ex. I was very fed up with everything that was going on back in college. No, it’s not a good thing that I became a dropout student. And my parents are going to kill me when they find out. But ever since the seventh grade, Melinda and I have had this crazy dream of becoming singers. But no, not here. America was not good enough. So we went towards college in Japan, hoping to get a good education while pursuing the entertainment business. Well, that didn’t work! And i’m not asian. That sure helps me alot! But I do speak fluent Japanese and Korean. Yes, it pays to be an IB student. Melinda is asian, but she isn’t from Japan or Korea. Bummer, we’re stupid! How are two Americans going to get by like this? Well, I figured if we didn’t both make it as singers, then one would just bump money off of the other and tag along. Ain’t no shame in that! (Well actually, it looks rude and uncouth but we don’t care.) We just got here. Who cares. Seoul is beautiful. It is a really nice city. Not like Tokyo, not like New York. With a smile, I look off into the distance and watch planes take off, and planes land. I feel like a philosopher. “Cara. Cara! CARA!!!” “STOP SCREAMING!” I yelled loudly. People turned and looked at where the banshee scream came from. “Great, not you ruined my chance. There was a really hot guy over there!” “We have no money, no food, we’re still sitting in the airport, and you’re thinking about hot guys?” Melinda gave me a sarcastic catface. I rolled my eyes and looked around. Something was missing.“Oh jesus. Where did I put my bag!?” I yelled, as a frantically began throwing my belongings everywhere. “Dammit!” I yelled. Thank god not many people spoke English. “We have to go back! I don’t know where I put my bag!” Melinda got up and we started searching. Through the terminal. around the airport. Everywhere we went. The bag was nowhere to be seen. I had gotten so grumpy and angry, I we had searched for hours. I started yelling and getting mad at Melinda because I was hungry and tired. We got up and left, leaving a report of stolen or missing baggage. “Oi.” I heard from behind me. There was a tall ginger headed boy standing in front of me, holding up a red bag. I began to break down in tears. The boy looked straight at Melinda, who had no idea what was going on and also had the same strange expression the boy had. He lightly tapped my back. “gwaenchanayo?” The boy asked, with a worried expression on his face. “I- I’m fine.” I said. “THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH THIS MEANS TO ME!” I ran and hugged Melinda, leaving the bewildered boy standing around with my red purse. He also came over and gave me a reassuring look. “Is this yours?” He asked politely. “I-It is mine. Thank you so much!” In my heart, I wanted to hug him for his kindness, but instead I smiled and bowed. “No need to be formal. If you guys are lost or need some help getting around, I can show you! Are you going to be alright?” I smiled. “Yes, we’re fine.” He looked unsatisfied with my reply, with a look of worry in his eyes. “I mean, is there anything that I can do for you two? If you don’t have any money, I can spot you a few dollars or a small meal if you’d like!” “THAT WOULD BE AWES---” I cut Melinda off. “What she means to say is that we’re grateful you helped us and all, but we can not accept all of these favors!” He blushed and smiled. “It’s no problem! I mean, you two are foreigners to Korea, right? I can help you!” I was embarrassed at the fact that we had no money or place to stay. I couldn’t present myself in this way to such a kind person! “We can’t... But thanks for your help!” He looked slightly frustrated. “But why not? The least I can do is help you find where you’ll be staying if you don’t know!” I gave an obvious look of “She’s not telling me something” with a guilty look in my eyes. He analyzed the look. “Wait, don’t tell me you don’t know where your hotel is! Or could it be that you don’t have a place to stay?” He gave a sarcastic look. I stared at my feet, with Melinda nearly falling asleep on my shoulder. “Come with me. I may just be a regular city boy, but I don’t want anything to happen to you two. This is not a good place to be if you want to make the sidewalk and a tree your home.” He held out his hand. I didn’t even give it a thought and I instinctualy grabbed his hand as he navigated melinda and I through the crowd. “By the way, my name is Touya Kim.” “I’m Caramelle Harper and The sleepy one next to me is Melinda Pham.” He grinned. “Wow what a cool name! I mean, yours Caramelle.” I smiled. “Thanks!” Melinda woke up only to hear us talking about her. Then she gave me an irritated look and went back to sleepy- walking. I thought for a moment. “Wait, isn’t Touya a Japanese name?” He looked back. “Yeah it is! My mom’s Japanese and my dad’s Korean.” I giggled. “That makes sense.” He smiled and continued to lead the way. We walked for a few blocks, passing magnificent fountains, and people, and a lot of lights, like Tokyo. “Well, this is my apartment!” I looked up. It was a rusty building, and it looked to be old. “You coming?” He asked, waiting for me to stop staring. “Yes!” I said, with an embarrassed look on my face. He lived on the top floor. “Well, here we are!” I took my shoes off, and helped Melinda with hers. “I’ll take your stuff for you. Make yourself at home while I cook up some dinner.” I bowed to him and he went to the kitchen part of the room and started cooking. It was a small and cramped apartment, and it was only a living room/kitchen and a bathroom. I sat down and Melinda fell asleep on my lap. The time was 11:08 pm. “Touya, you aren’t a high schooler, right?” I asked, wondering if he’d be okay the next morning. “Naw, i’m 20! I have a job at a little kiosk inside of the airport.” He said, as he began flipping the rice. “That smells really good!” I said, with a hungry look on my face. Melinda suddenly and dramatically lifted her head up and began looking around. “Where are we?” She asked. “In Touya’s house.” I replied. “Oh, okay,” She said, as she closed her eyes. “WAIT WHAT!?!” She screamed. “WHO THE HELL IS TOUYA!? HAVE WE BECOME PROSTITUTES???” I got angry. “NO, YOU IDIOT! TOUYA IS THE GUY WHO FOUND MY PURSE! HE’S VERY KIND AND HOSPITABLE! YOU WERE SLEEPING WHILE THE EXPLAINING WAS GOING ON!” Touya began to laugh hysterically. Both Melinda and I stopped bickering and looked at Touya. “I haven’t had this much excitement around me in such a long time. You know, i’m really happy to have you guys around.” Melinda and I giggled as Touya smiled at us and dished up our plates. “Well, here you go! I know it’s not much, but I hope you guys enjoy!” He had made Galbi and miso soup. “Itadakimasu!” Melinda and I said. Touya began to laugh again. “It’s been awhile since i’ve heard that expression,” Touya said with a smile. Melinda and I giggled as we picked up our chopsticks. But then I set them down. “Let’s see if you are really legit Japanese.” I picked up the soup spoon and laid it into the miso, then I picked it up, blew on it, and tasted it. It was amazing. “This is really good!” I said loudly, Touya blushed a little. “You know, it really isn’t much...” He said. “MM! Yesh it ish!” Said Melinda, with her mouth full of galbi. I gave her a stern look. She was using the eating side of the chopsticks on a communal plate. “Oops! Sorry!” She said, and I gave a prissy face. I put the dishes into the sink and washed them. “You didn’t have to do that!” Said Touya, looking guilty that he didn’t do it. Melinda was on the floor with her hands over her belly, looking like a satisfied cat. “Looks like somebody’s a happy kitty,” Said Touya to Melinda, who smiled and continued to look up at the ceiling. Melinda and I helped Touya pull out the extra futons. We made our beds. Melinda and I changed into our PJ’s in the bathroom, brushed our teeth, and got ready for bed. “Is it alright if I turn the lights out?” Asked Melinda. Touya and I nodded our heads yes and we all went to sleep. I had a few hours of peaceful slumber, but I was woken by thirst. I went over to the sink and filled the glass with water. I sat back down to my bed, and I saw a picture of a young boy with two siblings and his parents. “Is that Touya?” I asked myself. I noticed he was out of bed. “Neon nae mami deulligin hani moreun cheok hani” I hear in the background.
“Wae geuri molla i meong cheonghan baboya Oh”
“I’m fallin’ down cheomcheom gipeojyeo ga” I walk towards the balcony as the sound gets louder. “Ni geuriume neomu sumi makyeowa Girl oneuldo” I hear, as I peer over, only to see Touya standing up, singing his heart out. As the words flow through my head, I am deeply touched by his beautiful voice. “It’s even more beautiful than mine or Melinda’s!” I think to myself as I sit down outside of the door and listen to him finish his song. His voice was so lush and pure, so crisp, not missing one note at all. It flowed perfectly. He took a deep breath and turned around when he finished. “Caramelle!? What are you doing here!? you’re awake!?” He said, with a sense of shock and embarrassment in him voice. “You’re an amazing singer.” I said to him. He had no expression at all. “Let’s just both get back to bed, ne? It’s been a long day.” He smiled, but had a little furrow in his brow. We walked back inside, and got back into our beds. I watched him as he fell asleep. I looked over at Melinda, who was snoring extremely loudly. I thought to myself “she needs a plug...” And then I looked over at the sleeping Touya. He began to talk in his sleep a little. I really couldn’t understand most of what he was saying, but I did hear one thing he said clearly. “I want to sing.”
That’s it for part 1! Look forward to the next part coming out soon!
