Let me clue you in to what Ava and I do. Ava and I compete in western gaming and rodeos. We do barrels, pole bending, team roping and a series of other western gaming events.
FLASHBACK
Ava is prancing in the alleyway, she knows whats coming. She snorts and dances as i hold her back.
The announcer at the NFR calls us, "Ladies and Gentlemen, here to take her chance at the finals is the one and only, Megan Blackwell on her horse Western Avalanche. Good Luck Megan!"
I no longer hold Ava back, she takes off. She heads to the right towards the first barrel, I drop my outside rein, lean in slightly and grab my saddle horn. Ava drops her front shoulder and makes a perfect turn. Off to the second barrel. I drop my rein and grab my horn, but to early. I lean and accidentally throw Ava off balance. She slips and falls, I fall. The crowd gasps, and i hear a heart shattering crack. Everything goes black.
I wake up and see white, everywhere. I hear a steady rhythm beeping. I turn my head to see my dad, slumped over in a chair in the corner, sleeping. Courtney and Jessica, my sister and best friend, are both curled up on the couch on the other side of the room under a blanket. I can't feel much, but what I can feel doesn't feel right. I start to have a panic attack and the rhythmic beeping increases rapidly. Doctors and nurses rush into my bedside, waking everyone up. My dad rushes to my side with tears in his eyes while Courtney and Jessica stand worried behind him.
"What happened? How long was I out" My voice is raspy and it hurts to talk so I whisper.
It's Courtney that speaks up first. "You've been in a coma, two months. At the NFR. The accident, Ava lost her footing and slipped. She landed on top of you. Megan... she broke her leg"
"NO... Ava! Courtney, where is she? Is she okay? Oh no, this is all my fault." I start breaking down and crying, violently shaking and sobbing. My dad sits with me on the bed and I feel safe, I slowly drift off due to the sedative given to me to help me calm down.
I wake up to see Courtney in the chair in the corner reading, when she sees that I'm awake she comes to stand by me.
"Is Ava okay?" I ask her.
"When she fell, she broke her leg. The vet did everything he could to repair it. Fortunately, he was able to stabilize her leg and get her in a sling in the barn. There's just one thing, you can ride but can't race her anymore. The vet said she can be used as a trail horse or a light work horse. No more tight, sharp turning which means no more running barrels with her. There is a much higher risk for her to get hurt in the future and for the injury to be greater. I'm so sorry Megan." Courtney holds NY hand in hers and reassuringly squeezes it.
"Why can't I feel my left leg very well?" I ask quietly.
"When Ava fell she landed on you. She crushed your ankle, broke your femur and dislocated your knee. You had surgery for your ankle and your knee was fixed but, your femur is going to take longer to heal." Courtney explained to me the extent of my injuries.
