I could tell it was going to be one of those days. Nothing seemed to go right all morning. I was mindlessly sitting at the kitchen bench when all of a sudden the front door swung open and there appeared two lanky figures with rugged clothes and no shoes. As I ushered them inside, I took the time to take in their appearances. It was a elderly man and a young girl who looked about 8 years old. Both of them were very skinny and you could see they were unable to make ends meet.
“H-help…” The old man croaked, his voice raspy and underused. I stood there in a daze, unsure of what to do. I had never been in this sort of situation before, and I didn’t have the slightest clue what to do. With a silent hand gesture, I directed the man into the bathroom where he shut himself in with who I had assumed was his granddaughter. From the other side of the door I heard hushed voices discussing something. Still shocked, I wandered back into the kitchen to evaluate what had happened.
All I could gather was that the pair must have been in some sort of trouble. They had stumbled across my doorstep, asked for help and then continue to have a gossip session in my bathroom. I’m confused too. I knocked on the bathroom door after about 5 minutes of waiting, only to be greeted by a door swinging open, sending me flying backwards into the wall. Being my awkward self, I apologised, “I, uh sorry,”. The man looked at me with confusion and I gave him the same expression in return. “How can I help you?” I asked, regaining my posture and hoping to finally get an answer out of this strange man. Instead, the girl piped up and suggested “Can we eat?”
20 minutes later our stomachs were full and my brain was still overflowing with questions about the unusual pair. Unable to take it any longer, I broke the silence. “Who are you and why are you here?” I questioned. The man looked up at me with a look of sorrow on his face. “I’m sorry, I guess I should explain,” This was the first time I’d heard him speak properly, and he sounded quite unwell. “To put it bluntly, I’m dying. My granddaughter, Alice,” he informed me as he nodded at who I assumed was Alice, “If, I mean when I die, she will have nowhere to go. Recently, my sickness has been getting worse, a lot worse. I have a few days at most. I needed to find someone to look after her, and your house was closest. Please help me.” He told me and I could see the pure desperation in his eyes. After about 5 mins of silence he started sobbing quietly.
“Hey, it’s going to be ok,” I whispered to the man, failing in my weak attempt at comforting him. Suddenly, a thought appeared in my mind. What if we were to adopt the girl? My parents had only ever been able to have one child, me, as my mum got an illness. In their busy lives they have never considered it as it would waste time. But this was different. I wanted so badly to help the pair so I excused myself from the table to ring my parents. A lot of persuasion and a promise later, I re-entered the kitchen with a large grin on my face.
“My parents will be home soon, and they want to meet Alice!” I smiled. The man’s face lightened like a child’s on Christmas day.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” He exclaimed. “I can’t, I just, I don’t think you understand how much this means to me!” The man seemed overjoyed and I couldn’t be happier. I was going to have a sister!
Suddenly it went quite and the man whispered, “I don’t want my young Alice to experience me leaving this world.” He slowly got up from his seat, turned around, kissed Alice on the cheek and whispered something in her ear. Walking towards me he thanked me once more and gave me a bear hug. He continued to walk behind me, I don’t know why though, as there was a wall there. I heard Alice gasp, so I quickly turned in my chair to see what was wrong, only to see that the old man had walked straight through the wall and disappeared. That was the last we saw of him.
