Chapter Four: "Jonathon and Ginger-Fluff make a Noise."
"We can't let Spoilt Sopher suffer like that!" Ginger-Fluff peeped.
"He probably won't die of starvation in one day," Jonathon began practically, but Ginger-Fluff interrupted him.
"What about dehydration – can't you die from that in a few hours?" Ginger-Fluff cried.
"I don't know," Jonathon said. "I've heard heat-stroke can be dangerous – but this is night!"
"Please hurry," Spoilt Sopher mewed from within the shed.
"I know," Jonathon announced, "We will make as much noise as we can under Mrs. Harrison's bedroom window."
"But she is deaf," Ginger-Fluff objected.
"We have to try," Jonathon said. "Which is Mrs. Harrission's bedroom, Sopher?"
"The back one – next to the kitchen," Spoilt Sopher mewed.
Jonathon and Ginger-Fluff could tell which one was the kitchen window because it was fairly high, about chest height for a human, and ran almost the entire width of the wall, as if it was over the sink, which it probably was. They ran up to the next window, which was a nice, regular bedroom shaped window and began to yowl at the tops of their voices.
Mrs. Harrison didn't stir and Jonathon jumped up against the window. He discovered that if he jumped at the shutter just right, it tapped against the wall, making a noise that even an old lady who had taken her hearing aids out might hear. Ginger-Fluff joined him, and between them, the two cats made quite a clatter.
Mrs. Harrison must have got out of bed without Jonathon and Ginger-Fluff hearing her, because she suddenly stuck her head out of the window, giving them a fright. "Bad cats!" she exclaimed. "Go away."
Then they heard her shuffling around her room and muttering to herself. "I hope they are not hurting my Sopher. Where is Sopher – I haven't seen him all day?"
"Good," Jonathon whispered. "She is looking for Spoilt Sopher. Now we just have to get her to look in the right place. How are we going to do that?"
