I woke up Sunday morning with the light shining through the windows. I got out of bed and went to my closet. I grabbed a pair of black skinny jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and my Hufflepuff beanie. I walked into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked like death. I hadn't slept well last night and it showed. I pulled my clothes on and put on some makeup. It wasn't much, but it did its job. I filled up a glass of water and drank half of it. I walked out of my room with the glass and into my little sister's. She's 12 while I'm 16. I walk up to her bed with the water. Before I get a chance to dump it on her head, I hear a noise and look up. A girl is standing there. She has long blonde hair tied back with a green ponytail, blue eyes, and pale skin. She was wearing a dress that looked like it was made of many layers of overlapping leaves. She also had sparkling green wings that fluttered behind her.

She looked at me and turned around quickly. She flew out of the window and fell to the ground. I ran to the window and saw her running away. She took off flying and I watched her until she disappeared. I heard some rustling in the bed and turned around. My sister was awake and sitting up.

"Morning Lily."

"Morning Zoey. It's your turn to walk Bandit."

"Right. I was going to do that after I woke you up." I walked out of her room and down the stairs. My mom was cooking breakfast in the kitchen. I walked to the front door and grabbed Bandit's leash. He was already patiently waiting at the door for me to walk him. I opened the door and we walked to the park. We walked around for a little while before I saw a path that I hadn't taken before. We walked down the path for a minute before I saw a cave with a blue light shining in deep in it. I walked closer and was about to go in when Bandit's leash broke. I hadn't even realized he was pulling on it.

He took off towards the park and I ran after him. 'I guess the cave will have to wait.' I thought to myself. I caught up to Bandit and picked him up. He was really light for a dog his size. I walked back to the house and let him in. He ran to the kitchen and started begging my mom for food. I walked into the kitchen myself and made some toast. Lily came down the stairs fully dressed, but she still looked really tired. She put some eggs on a plate and sat down at the island. I put my toast on a paper towel and sat down across from her. My mom got some eggs and sat down beside both of us. We said grace and even though I'm atheist I still said it. I hadn't told my mom yet because I'm afraid she wouldn't accept me. She is very conservative, but I am more liberal.

I finished breakfast first. I put my paper towel in the trash and sat back down at the island.

"Hey Lily. Do you want to go on a walk with me?"

"Where to?"

"Just the park. It's a beautiful day."

"Fine."

"Let's go."

"I'm not done eating breakfast."

"Hurry up."

"There I'm done."

"Good. Come on." I grabbed her hand and practically dragged her out the door. We walked to the park and I lead her down the path I found. We got to the cave and I was about to go in when Lily said,

"I don't want to go in there. It's dark."

"It'll be fine. I'll protect you."

"Fine, but if I hear a noise I'm out." we walked in. The first area in the cave was full of stalactites and stalagmites. It was a small area and I walked through it in about a minute. We entered an even smaller area that had a pool in the middle of it. It was really deep and had a bunch of coral on the bottom of it. The cave looked really old, but it didn't feel old. It didn't have that old rock smell to it.

Suddenly I got pushed into the pool. I heard Lily scream and looked to her. She had been pushed in too and she couldn't swim. I had been taught when I was young and we lived on a beach, but we had moved to a land-locked state when I was 5 and Lily was 1. She never got a chance to learn.

I dove down and caught her before she hit the coral. A lot of it looked sharp. I pulled her back up and hauled her onto the edge of the pool. She coughed a few times and spit out some water. She laid on her back and breathed deeply.

"You okay?"

"Yeah. Just a bit shaken up."

"Want me to teach you how to swim?"

"Are you insane?"

"Maybe."

"Fine. But if I die, it's your fault."

"Okay. First, you need to get in the water." She lowered herself into the water. For the next two hours, I taught her how to swim. When I was done, she could dive and stay underwater for half a minute. I swam to the bottom of the pool and was about to swim up when something caught my eye. I swam over to it and saw two necklaces. One was a white wing with a few black feathers and the other was a black wing with a few white feathers. I picked them up and looked at hem closer. While I was looking at them, they glowed with a yellow light and connected in the middle. I pulled on them and they separated with a blueish light. I swam up to the surface and took a deep breath. I swam over to the side of the pool and set the necklaces down with a good distance between them. Lily swam up beside me and looked at them.

"What are those?"

"They're necklaces. I found them at the bottom of the pool, but watch this." I pushed them closer together and they connected.

"That's really cool. What are we going to do with them?"

"We could wear them, but we would have to keep them a secret. Can you do that?"

"Definitely." I handed her the white wing and I took the black one. We put them on and swam around a bit more. It was about 5 minutes before my legs started tingling. I swam up to the surface and to the side of the pool. The tingling got worse and started to hurt. My legs seemed to be attracted to each other. I looked back at them and they were glowing brightly. I watched as they molded together with untold amounts of pain. I screamed as I watched them. The pain and light finally subsided.

I looked at my legs and saw a blue tail. The top of it was light blue and it faded down to almost black at the tips of the fins. I also had a bra with the same ombre effect. I pulled myself out of the water and attempted to pull the tail off. I didn't work. I kept trying to pull it off when I realized something.

I hadn't seen Lily come up for a breath in a few minutes. I dragged myself back to the side of the pool and looked down. I saw Lily lying on the bottom of the pool. She had a tail and bra like mine except her's were green. I dove in and swam down to her. I finally reached her and grabbed her around the waist. I hauled her to the surface with much difficulty. Swimming with a tail while carrying a heavy person is not as easy as it looks. I finally reached the top and pushed her onto the side. I pulled myself up and beside her.

I started giving her CPR and she coughed up a bunch of water. She threw up a bunch and after a few minutes sat up.

"What happened?"

"You grew a tail like me and got caught by the pain and passed out."

"Wait. How did we grow tails? How is this possible?"

"I don't know, but let's not think about that now. What we really need to think about is how to get these things off."

"Okay. From the mermaid stories that I've read, the mermaid changes back when they gets dry."

"Well, it's a start. Wait. We didn't bring any towels with us. How are we going to get dry?" it was an hour before my legs started tingling again. They started to separated. It didn't hurt as much this time, but that didn't mean it was painless. Lily gasped a bit beside me, but was quiet most of the time. My legs and clothes reappeared and I stood up. I helped Lily up and we walked out of the cave.

We walked home in silence, both of us trying to understand what just happened. We walked inside and went to our own rooms. I grabbed a white nightgown from my dresser and change. I then crawl into bed and fall into a sleep filled with fish and mermaids.
