Epilogue
Nyxeria looked out the window to the endless city below. At night it seemed like the city was on fire with an artificial glow, like a testament to human possibility. It wasn’t the biggest flat, but they both thought the view was well worth the sacrifice. Not to mention it was next to a great Thai restaurant, whom she ordered dinner from tonight.
“No Mom, I can’t go to church with you tomorrow. I’m in London. Can you remember why I am in London?” Nyxeria had been talking on the phone with her mother for the past hour. She called once a day, but the conversations were beginning to shorten as her mother adjusted. Mrs. Page had been released and was in transition housing. Becky kept her updated. It was going smoothly. Nyxeria regretted not getting her mother help long ago. She was doing so much better with medication and therapy.
“Okay Mom, I have to go now. Send everyone my love.”
Max was sitting at the door, wagging his tail. It was the first sign that Travis was almost home. It hadn’t been easy fitting a dog into city life, but she came to the conclusion there was no way she could live without him. Nyxeria found herself struggling to fit into his life as well, until she came to the conclusion that she couldn’t. Instead she made her own life and together they found a balance. She checked her phone before turning it off. Bruce and Becky had gotten engaged. Becky was constantly texting her about wedding plans. No distractions this evening. Tonight was Nyxeria and Travis’ six month anniversary. Nyxeria lit candles and poured a bottle of Mourvèdre as she dished out the food from its boxes. Max gave a bark and began to wag his tail.
Travis opened the door, “Hello, my darling, you look exquisite.”
“Hello, sweetheart. Thank-you. It’s a new dress I got shopping with the girls yesterday. How was work?”
Travis looked exhausted, “Amazing as long as I don’t think about the fact that I woke up at 5 o’clock this morning and I have to do it all again tomorrow.” He kissed her, “How was your day?”
Nyxeria’s eyes lit up, “Incredible. You don’t even want to know how much blood I saw today.”
“Tell me all about it after we eat,” Travis patted Max, “Hey boy, how’s holding down the fort?”
“I missed you,” she told him.
“I missed you too,” Travis looked at the table, “Am I forgetting some anniversary?”
“I don’t know, what happened six months ago?” She teased.
“Oh yes that’s right,” he kissed her and laughed, “I got shot.”
