As usual, Grandma wakes me up with her loud voice. She just likes to sing her hymnal, she is the religious one. Sitting up on my bed trying to put the pieces of the flashing images together, I try getting off the bed. I take a quick look at my phone and it's 6:30 am. "Gosh, I hate Mondays " I mutter to myself. I
"Tina! Tina! , don't make me come up there and get you" Grandma screamed her throat off.
" Geez I will be down in a minute grams" I reply wandering around and looking for my Slippers and a coat to cover my nightgown. I head down the Stairs to know what she wants. Like always she has her chewing stick in her mouth and her scarf securely knotted on her head, a habitual smile forms on my face just by seeing her.
"Good morning grams" I say trying to get her to smile back.
"Good morning lazy head, how was your night?" she inquires. I knew this woman could not get angry with me for long. She loves it when I greet her in the morning and besides I am considered her last child since she took me in after my mom left.
"Hurry, go to the store and get me some eggs, bread and milk".
"Errm please let me brush my teeth and I will get them for you"
A slightly irritating look at me tells me I have seconds to finish.******
It's 7:30 am and I am barely ready for my morning lectures, Mrs Antwi is a principled lady who doesn't condone lateness. My phone chimes and I rush towards it to find Mabel's call, Monica has sent a few messages as well. A little worry sweeps through me because these friends of mine don't call as early as this.
"Hey, what's up? Is everything ok? "
I asked "Good morning to you too, how was your night?" she replied sarcastically as always. " just cut to the chase and tell me why you calling this early morning princess," I said while throwing my stuff in my bag. I don't know what I threw in the bag, my phone between my tilted head and shoulder I rush out of the room." do you remember Mrs Antwi's presentation is today?" she asked "So why do you think I was up all night? The books are not pretty you know" I answered while rolling my eyes. Heading straight for the door I gestured something that looked like a goodbye to Grams and out of the door I went ignoring her scolding.
" chill, angry woman, I am only trying to remind you since you are being forgetful these days," she says teasingly. The bus to the university is almost here and surprisingly more than ten people are waiting to catch the same bus. I guess I am not the only one who is late, the bus is spotted is the agitation is getting stronger.
"shut up!, I am trying to catch the bus" I said as I tried forcing my way through " I am hanging up" I said
" Lina wait... " I hang up even before she can finish talking.
I push, force and kick while trying to get the last seat. Getting a bus on Monday mornings from Suame where I stay to Tech is a miracle so Yea call me brutal but drastic cases call for drastic measures. Phew! I get the last seat and victory is mine.
I try the memorise my work for the last time as we drive to the university.****************
"Thank God you are here " Monica whispered as I sat beside her. Mabel smirks and turns to look at the door as it opens. All eyes are set on the lady pushing the door open and as usual, it is Mrs Antwi in her Navy blue pencil skirt just a little bit below the knee and perfectly tucked in a light blue shirt. Matching her bag are a dark red buttonlike earring and her 5-inch heels. As always she looks elegant but the irony is she is late and the whole class is anxious to hear her excuse.
"Good morning class, I am sorry for coming in late but I had personal matters that needed my immediate attention" A rare smile spread on her face and she continued " I hope you are ready for your presentation because I am ready. "
She calls the students one after the other and takes their scripts for further assessment. It's nearly my turn and my heart cannot stop jumping, I have witnessed how she looks at people through her glasses. My phone vibrates bringing me back to my senses, I take it out and notice a strange number calling. Immediately muting the phone Mabel notched me a little to draw my attention to Mrs Antwi who had been calling my name for a while. "Young lady, are you ready to present? Or perhaps you'd prefer we Wait for you till you finished" she asked coldly. I gathered my things and headed towards her ignoring the little cry of Monica when I stepped on her toe.
These sweats choose the perfect time to appear, I shuffle through my papers and start to read out my poem.
"Push! Push! Force and sprout
On thorns, it fell during the drought
Lifeless and restless in the sheath
Of the scorching, it withers beneath
Faith so strong ever alive
Little rain to quench the pain
Nothing but the eyes rain..." The ringing of my phone nearly sent me to my early grave. Looking up to see Mrs Antwi staring coldly at me as if I killed her cat. "sorry ma'am, I forgot to take it off ring" I say apologetically. " do it now and bring the phone" she says sternly. I check the phone to see several missed calls from Grams and a text. She doesn't call me when I am in school so the calls and text sweep worry through me. Forgetting who I am with and where I am, I check the text and it reads
" I have been taken to the ER please come"
