Years ago, when your sister had announced that she was getting married to Matt Koster, you had become light-headed.

And then when she announced that she was already pregnant with his child, you had fainted.

Matt Koster was not a trustworthy person. He had done drugs for much of his younger life before dropping out of high school. He could never hold a job, his responsibility levels were beneath childish, and he was exactly the kind of person you had always hoped your older sister would never associate herself with.

For a long time, your trust for this Matt person did not increase, nor decrease. He managed to hold a job at a gas station for a while, and the couple received a large amount of support from the whole family.

Well, that is, from everyone except you. This tore a hole between you and your elder sister. The only thing that mended it for a while was the birth of her child and the announcement that you were to be the godmother.

For a couple more years, you two were thick as thieves. After a car accident, her uterus was removed, much to her sorrow - she had been wanting another child. You, being quite well-off, attempted to help bring her out of debt with her hospital and house bills.

Your father, however, did not seem to understand. Rather than help with what she already owed, he plotted with your sister - without your knowledge or permission - and funded her in an endeavor to adopt another child.

Your anger only doubled whenever it was discovered that Matt had been drinking and spending money they did not have. When you confronted her about it, she defended him relentlessly and refused to listen to you.

For years after that you and your sister had minimum contact. For all you knew, she and her crazy drunkard of a husband were barely scraping by, dragging those kids down to hell with them.

For years, you were angry at your sister.

But you never expected that one day, even that anger would have to come to an end in the most brutal way possible.

It was midnight. You were standing in your doorway, leaning on the frame for support. The night was cold with rain, and the officer in front of you looked so forlorn in his long trench coat and wet black hair.

"I'm sorry, Miss (L/N). We will discuss more tomorrow. I expect you'll want to be alone now."

With that, he left, raising his umbrella again.

You closed your door and sank to the floor, stunned into silence. About twenty minutes later, the reality struck you, and you were left in a wailing mess on your hall floor.

Your sister and her oldest child had been slaughtered by her husband, Matt Koster, before the police arrived, just in time to save their youngest. The neighbors in their apartment had seen Koster arrive home drunk, before an intense argument broke out. At the sound of the racket and a scream, the police had been called.

But they did not arrive in time to save your sister.

You cried all night, laying hopelessly on the floor, wishing to die if it meant bringing her and her innocent child back.

Why hadn't you done something to stop this years ago?

LEVI'S POV:

My eyes skimmed the paper that Hanji had shoved into my face. She was throwing some kind of racket, blabbering about something that had happened last night.

"MAN MURDERS WIFE AND CHILD" was sprawled across the top of the page. I scowled deeply. These kinds of things were enough to ruin my day.

"Isn't it awful?" Hanji demanded, leaning over my desk. "I hear the family was told last night. Apparently, one kid was left alive!"

I sighed. "What do you want me to say? The kid's heading to the orphanage?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

She shook her brunette head, glasses gleaming. "The child will go to the godmother. That's all they know right now."

I rolled my eyes. "Good luck to anyone who has to deal with that shit," I mumbled, looking out the window.
