Selina was walking home from work, ready to get home and sleep. The only reason she actually made it through the day was that she was finally 18, and was able to finally quit her crappy job. As she walked home, she hummed a happy tune and had a little pep in her step.
"I'm so excited!" She said to herself, as she reached her apartment. She was going to join the National League of Evolution, or NLE, tomorrow. When she reached her apartment she dug through her purse and unlocked the door and walked in.
"I'm home!" she shouted, not knowing whether or not her parents were home yet. With no response back, Selina realized they weren't home. Tossing her favorite purple jacket onto a dining chair, she walked into the kitchen and raided the fridge, grabbing a yogurt. As she was opening it, the front door opened and a feminine voice yelled out, "I'm home!".
"Hey mom, how was work?" Selina asked.
"Oh you know how it is, boring as always," Terra recounted, with a smile in her eye.
"Dad home yet?" Selina questioned, eating another spoonful of yogurt.
"Oh, he had to stay after for a project at the factory. Apparently, something broke and he's the only one with the smarts to fix it. Don't worry. He will be home in a couple of hours."
"All right. I was about to watch TV, wanna join?" Selina asked, pointing towards the small couch.
Terra shrugged. "Might as well, got nothing else to do today. What's on tonight?"
"Well, let's see," Selina turned on the TV, "Dr. Shoe is on, there are a few episodes of Toaster Jam recorded-"
"Let's watch Toaster Jam, and when your father gets home we can make bets about who's gonna win," Terra declared, grabbing the remote and clicking play. She jumped onto the couch, making it creak, and settled into a middle spot. Selina shook her head and chuckled, sitting down in a corner, still eating her yogurt with vigor.
After the show, Selina got up and threw away her yogurt. As she was about to retire for the night, as it was 9:34 p.m., the door opened and a deep hearty voice rang through the doorway.
"I'm home!" Chris announced, his voice easily echoing through the apartment.
"Hey, dad! How was work?" Selina asked.
"God, it was interesting, to say the least."
"At least it was interesting," she complained.
"Dear, stop complaining about work, it's not my fault jobs that don't require a college degree in this area suck." Terra sighed.
"Speaking of your job, you stated interest in quitting your current job. Did you?" Chris asked, raising his eyebrow questioningly.
"Yes, but before you ask, I have an offer somewhere else. I wouldn't have quit my job if I didn't," Selina uttered, almost rolling her eyes.
"Where are you going to be working?" Terra asked.
"You know the, ahh, research group trying to combine and modify genes?"
"Don't tell me." Terra facepalmed.
"Well, I applied there, and I'm either assisting in the combining genes or testing the ones that are deemed safe and testable. It depends on my gene sequencing," she informed.
"Well, as long as you're sure. How'd you get a positive reply back?" Chris asked.
"My grades in math and science are exceptional, plus they are understaffed due to many people being wary of the technology used to manipulate the genes. I don't have enough money to bribe them even if I wanted too," she chuckled at her own joke.
