Chapter 6: Our dreams have no limitations
Blah. Darn, it’s really happening. I’m finishing year 11. Graduation is tomorrow night. Yeah, at my school we finish at year 11 instead of year 12, I think it’s designed to give the rich kids a gap year before college.
Ah shoot, I really can’t believe it. It’s just, I don’t know, its just weird to think that in two days I can be whatever I want and do whatever I want with the small amount of money I have saved over the past ten years.
For me, college is not an option yet. I’m not some wild child, but I’m free and I don’t want the stress and pressure yet. I don’t need to be tamed nor do I need someone telling me what art is. I know what art is, it may be different to their opinion of art but oh well. We are individual right? Well so is my art work.
Buzzzz I’m a gummi oh yes I’m a gummi bear-
“Hello,” I say into my phone,
“Hey there girl,” I hear April’s voice through the phone.
“April, I’m freaking out! We graduate tomorrow night! I don’t know if I can do it, April, seriously, I’m so worried,” I blurt.
“G, chill it woman, you have nothing to be scared of. I’m the one singing at graduation. The boys think they got it big, with them performing at Prom. But no! I am singing at graduation. It’s not only the most the important event in our lives so far, everyone’s parents are there as well, and I reckon someone’s dad is probably a record dealer!” April yells.
“Wow, I never thought of it like that, April seriously though you’ll be great! Like usual. Anyways, how’s good old Callum? I didn’t see him this week for some reason,” I tease,
“Shut up G! You know we spent the whole week together; it’s our last before Cal goes to Europe for the year! He’s so rich it’s not funny, I mean seriously he buys me so many things that I can never repay him for. Did I show you the pendant necklace he gave me last week, for no particular reason except for it made him think of me!” April says.
“Hmm, I wish I was rich, then I could travel the world, instead of being stuck here all of next year,” I say.
“Yeah same, oh well… Shoot, look sorry Grace, I’ve got to go, my mum is calling me downstairs,”
“Cya April,” I say and she hangs up.
I lie on my bed, looking up to my ceiling on which I’ve hung so many drawings of my favourite celebrities. The Police, The Killers, Counting Crows, Pink, Twin Atlantic, Good Charlotte, Nickelback, Matchbox twenty, you know that sort of music.
I leave my room, gently closing the door, and climb the small narrow ladder up to the attic. The plus side of the tiny ladder was that dad was too big to fit through the opening and mum’s knees were too sore and weak to climb up the ladder. That meant that only Hope and I can access the attic which is perfect for privacy and secrecy of my artwork.
My latest piece that I am working on is a sculpture of a graduation hat with all these past graduation speeches embossed onto it. I just have to put the last speech onto the hat and then I’m free to move onto my next piece which I want to be a massive canvas of sentences. This one is for the graduation evening, so I will highlight the word Graduation with rainbow highlighters. It sounds lame, but I made one for mum on Mother’s day and it turned out great.
Buzzzzzzzzzz yoyoyoyoyoyoyo its Lilio calling yo answer yo phone oh buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz yoyoyoyo-
“Hey Lilio,” I laugh into my phone.
“HOW DID YOU KNOW I WAS CALLING?” Lily yells.
“You set yourself that ringtone of you rapping,” I laugh really hard, forcing me to sit down in the beanbag chair next to the attic window.
“Oh that! Psh, as if you still have it!” Lily exclaims, she must be in a good mood at the moment.
“Lily, it makes me laugh every time you call, it’s too funny to delete!” I explain to her.
“Oh right, I thought you seriously thought it was a good ringtone… Anyways I’m calling to ask if you ended up getting a dress, AND before you cut me off I know you haven’t so I invite you to come dress shopping with me for prom tomorrow night…”
“Lil-” I start to say,
“No. Shut up Grace for a minute seriously! Now before you say it’s too late and all the good dresses have been taken, my mum has agreed to take us over to Westfield! It’s so far away that no one else will have bothered to get their dresses from there!”
“That sounds flawless to be honest,” I mutter.
“Of course it is! I came up with it,” Lily squeaks excitedly down the phone.
“So when is this happening again Lil?” I ask.
“I’m two minutes away! See you soon!” Lily says and hangs up.
Oh great.
She arrived within mintues and now we are scanning the Westfield carpark attempting to find a park; stupid idea really. It’s five weeks til Christmas, this is the best shopping centre for this area. We have a Westfield closer to our home, but as Lily did say everyone would have bought their dresses from there.
“THERE! There, there, there! The parking spot is there! Mum look, look, look, look, can you see it?” Lily yells all of a sudden. I jolt surprised.
“Lily, thank you darling, but inside voices please, this car park is crazy I need to concentrate!” Lily’s mum Darlene says.
I just sit looking out the window at all the other crazy families trying to find a car spot in the craze of madness in this place. We get out and proceed to all the dress stores in the dressy end of the shops.
(A/N: I’m making these dresses up, but the shop does exist!) We walk into Bardot and Lily is in love with all the sequins on a tight dress. It has one shoulder and proceeds down to mid-thigh with silver and black sequins, in a pattern of zebra skin. Shoving her towards the changing rooms with the dress in her hand is when I notice the dress.
It has small spaghetti straps that go straight over the shoulders; the top is a light blue, pulling the dress in is a nice a belt of rhinestones. The skirt flows out to the ankles and gradients in colour from light sky blue to a dark ink blue at the bottom of the dress.
Impulsively I grab it off the rack and high tail it to the change rooms, proceeding to try it on. I open the curtain and step out, Lily is already out, critiquing her dress.
“OMG GRACE! That dress is perfect! Oh my gosh, Grace you have to get it seriously!” She screams seeing me in my dress.
“Lily, you look incredible! Far out, look at your legs, they are perfect woman! I think we should get these ones!” I giggle.
Laughing we paid for the dresses which were in our budget (Praise the lord!) and headed off to find Darlene. We found her outside Donut King, classy we know.
In the car during the drive home, Lily had the radio on, blaring all the pop hits.
“Grace, stop grumbling! You are going to need to know some of these songs at prom! Its two days away! You are not going to have time to learn in between Graduation tomorrow night, and Prom the day after! Seriously woman, just put up with this music!” Lily whines.
And that is why I love traveling in the car with my best friend Lily!
