Chapter 31

Valerie’s P.O.V.

“Has he talked to you?” I ask Luke, shoveling another spoon of ice cream into my mouth.

“Nope.” He sighs, copying my actions. “He hasn’t showed up to band practice. And he’s ignoring Michael and Calum, too.”

“He was serious?” I ask with a frown.

“Yeah, I guess so. I’ve tried talking to him, but he won’t answer his phone. I even went over to his house yesterday and Patty told me he wanted to be left alone.”

“So now Patty hates us too?”

“And Michael and Calum.” Luke tells me.

“What do you mean?”

“We’re the reason Ashton quit the band. And Michael and Calum think you cheated on Ashton with me. And he’s not talking to them.”

I groan. “This is a mess, Luke.”

“I’m so fucking clumsy.” Luke mutters.

“It’s not your fault. It’s Ashton’s for not believing us. He didn’t even try listening to us. I feel like he’s been looking for excuses to break up with me and he finally found one.” I say, throwing my spoon into the empty ice cream carton.

“What do you mean?” He asks, picking up the ice cream carton and walking into my kitchen. I follow him in and lean against the wall.

“I don’t know. We’ve just been fighting so much and-” I take a deep breath. “I feel like he really was done with me before he broke up with me.”

“Val, he loves you.”

“If he loved me, he would’ve listened to me. I’m so tired of this, Luke. I just,” I sigh and hold my hands up to my face “Fuck this.”

“You’re about to cry, aren’t you?” Luke asks, quietly.

“Yeah.” I squeak.

Luke sighs and takes a step forward, wrapping his arms tightly around me, resting his head on top of mine. I hug him back and sniffle into his chest.

“It’s okay.” He says, rubbing my back. “He’ll get over it. He loves you.”

“No he doesn’t.”

“Valerie, listen to me.” Luke says, pulling away and looking into my watery eyes. “He loves you. You’re all he ever talks about. It’s annoying as fuck but we’re all so happy he loves you. Even if you guys are fighting right now, I know he loves you too much to let you go. Just let him blow off some steam.”

“It’s been two weeks, Luke.” I say.

“And it might be two more before he talks to you. The point is you have to give him time. Whenever Ashton gets mad, it’s best to give him space. He’ll come back when he’s ready.”

“Yeah, that was a month and a half last time.” I whisper.

“It could be sooner this time.”

“I doubt it.” I mutter.

“Val, come on.” Luke whines.

“I’m sorry, I just wasn’t expecting to be this upset.” I tell him with a frown.

“Let’s watch a movie or something.” He suggests.

“Okay.” I tell him with a sad smile. We walk back over to the couch and he chooses a random movie as I huddle into the blankets. He takes a seat next to me as the movie starts. I rest my head on his chest and he wraps his arms around me.

“I’m so mad at him.” I whisper.

“I know. You have every right to be.”

“He’s such an asshole.”

“He can be, sometimes.”

“I’m just so angry.”

“I know.” Luke says with a sigh.

“He still has my dog.” I mutter.

“Then go get him.”

“I don’t want to talk to Ashton.” I groan.

“I bet he feels the same way.” He tells me with a smile.

“I really hate you.” I mutter.

“Love you too, Val.”

We stay silent as we watch the movie. I feel myself drifting off to sleep. My eyes flutter open and shut until I can’t keep them open anymore.

~~~
“Hey, Val. Wake up.” Luke whispers, nudging me gently.
“No.” I mutter.
“The movie ended like an hour ago. I really have to pee but you’re like, laying on top of me.”
“Fine.” I groan, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.
“Be right back.” Luke says, hopping off of the couch and running down the hall into the bathroom.
The front door opens and my mom steps inside. “Hi, sweetie.”
“Hi Mom.” I tell her, keeping my gaze on my hands.
“How are you doing?” She asks.
“I’m okay.” I mutter unhappily.
“Well, I bought groceries.” She tells me with a small smile. “And I’m gonna need some help bringing them up.”
“I’ll get ‘em for you.” Luke says, walking out into the living room with a smile.
“Hello Luke.” My mom tells him with a grin.
“Hi Ms. Hart.” Luke tells her with a smile.
Luke has completely won over my mom since Ashton broke up with me. She thinks Luke is so much sweeter and a gentleman, when in reality, he’s the biggest suck up ever. He’s always polite and courteous around my mother and it makes me want to elbow him in the stomach.
I get off of the couch and walk towards the front door, Luke trailing behind me. “So, groceries?” He asks.
“Yeah.” I tell him with a smile. “Be right back, mom.”
“Alright. I’ll be in my room.” She says with a smile.
I walk out of the front door, following Luke. He has a little bounce in his step. As much as he hates to admit it, he’s a people pleaser.
“You’re such a kiss ass.” I mutter.
“It’s not my fault people like me.” He says with a laugh.
“I don’t like you.” I tell him with a half smile.
“Cheer up.” He whines. “You’re so sad. Stop it.”
“Ashton hates me.” I groan, walking towards my mom’s car. “How can I not be sad?”
“Maybe because you have an amazing best friend who’s trying to make you feel better.” He mutters under his breath.
I roll my eyes. “Just help me with the groceries.”
“So demanding.” He mumbles.
“Hemmings, shut up and get some groceries.”
“You’re using me for my muscle.” He says with a giggle.
“Maybe I am.” I counter with a smile.
“Good. I’m just using you for your pretty hair.”
“Oh shut up.” I tell him with a smile.
