LUCY'S POV
I creep back into Harlin's ward when everyone's gone. I wanted to save the news for later. I think she might cry. I definitely will.
God, this is so exciting!
I try not to screech as I approach her bed with soft footsteps. These curtains will do nothing to block out the sound, and the nurse will be after me once I wake all these old people up.
"Hey," I whisper, shoving her shoulder lightly. Her eyes shoot open as she sits straight up, and her head whips to her left and right. Her hands, at the end of her shaking arms clutch the sides of the bed as her bloodshot eyes meet mine. I take a step towards her, but she inches as far away from me as she can. "Who are you?" she whispers, trying to back away.
"Dude, what happened? Are you okay?"
Bad idea. Her face contorts as she screams, this time. "Leave me alone!"
Drops of spit fall on my face and I wince. This is bad. This is very bad.
"It's me, Lucy. Remember?" I persist, trying to remain calm, though every instinct I have tells me to leave, now. My heartbeat, pounding in my temple is almost louder than she is. I see a nurse walk up behind me, through the corner of my eye. She's going to tell me to leave, but I am not leaving that easily. Not without telling her the news.
"Look—"
"Get away from me!"
"It's me, Lucy. Lucy from school. I was here an hour ago, do you—"
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave—"
"No, I am not leaving," I say, gritting my teeth, and turn back around. "We were here an hour ago, okay? All of us—"
"What do you want from me?" she screams, and I finally take a step back. "What is wrong with you?"
She's nothing like herself. What has Cancer done to my best friend? Tears burn their way down my cheeks. What happened to her?
"I hate you," she says, her throat raw, "I hate you. I hate everything."
"Don't say that." My voice quivers, despite my trying to control it. "You don't mean any of that. You don't mean it." I don't know who I'm trying to convince.
Really, who am I trying to convince? The nurse?
"What is wrong with me?" she whispers, before collapsing into her hands. I walk up to her and take her hands in mine. "Hey. You're okay. You hear me? You're stronger than this. You—"
"I'm dying, Lucy," she says, her shoulders shaking. "I'm dying."
"No, you're not," I say firmly, "You can get through this."
She gives me a small smile. "It's too late, can't you see?"
"No, it isn't. I spoke to a bunch of doctors, and—"
"We can't afford that," she says, but I've come prepared.
"We've got you covered," I smile, tears threatening to make a second appearance.
"What do—"
"Why do you think we took so long to come see you? Luca and I helps raise money for your treatment. The whole neighborhood pitched in. You still have a chance."
"You mean everyone knows?" she whispers, even though that should be the least of her concerns right now. I nod, and she looks down at her hands.
"Why, what's wrong?" I say, but she shakes her head. "Nothing."
