Chapter 32

Valerie’s P.O.V.

“Where you going?” My mom asks the next morning with a smile. “Out with that Luke boy? You know, I like him better than Ashton.”

“Yeah, I know you do.” I tell her with an eyeroll. “And no, I’m not. I’m going to get my frikin’ dog.”

“From Ashton’s house?”

“Yeah.” I tell her. “Wish me luck. I’m really gonna need it.”

“Are you sure you don’t want breakfast or something before you go?” She asks.

“No thanks.” I tell her. I’d probably just throw it up from how nervous I am.

“Are you sure? I know it’s been really hard for you getting over him.”

“I’m not over him, mom. That’s the worst part.” I tell her, slumping into a chair next to her.

“Are you still gonna go over?”

“Yeah, but I’m just gonna sit down for a minute.” I tell her with a sigh.

“Does Luke know you’re going?”

“Yes.” I groan.

“Is he gonna go with you?”

“No.” I mutter, resting my forehead against the table.

“Why not?”

“I have to do this by myself, mom.” I tell her with a sigh, leaning back in my seat. I tap my fingers on the table and she looks up from her book.

“Is that why you’re dressed so nice?” She asks, a hint of playful sarcasm in her voice.

“Yes, I’m aware I look like shit. Thanks for reminding me.” I groan, looking down at my dirty t-shirt and shorts.

“You always look beautiful.” She tells me gently.

“Bye, mom.” I say with an eyeroll as I push my chair back and stand up.

“Oh, come on!” She says with a laugh.

“I’ll be back soon!” I say, grabbing my keys off of the counter. I open the front door and close it behind me, leaning against it. I shut my eyes for a second and take a deep breath. I take my time walking to my car. Once I’m inside, I sigh, turn it on, and turn the radio up. I pull out of my parking space and drive the familiar route to Ashton’s house.

I’ve spent all morning mentally preparing myself for this, racking my brain for all the possible scenarios that could happen. How I would respond if he said one thing, how I would respond if he said another. It seems like there’s nothing I missed. I pray that this will be as normal as possible and that it won’t get awkward or uncomfortable. I don’t need this to end badly and make me feel worse than I already do.

I pull into his driveway and turn off my car, sitting inside for a few minutes before deciding to get up and get this over with. I walk up his driveway slowly, debating if I should go through with this or not. “You have to get Winston.” I whisper to myself as I force my way to his front door. I take a deep breath before raising my hand and knocking twice, as lightly as possible so maybe no one will answer the door.

The front door swings open and Patty’s eyes widen when she sees me.

“Valerie-”

“I’m here for my dog.” I tell her firmly, pushing past her. I walk into the house and try not to look around, the memories already suffocating me. I walk towards the backyard when I hear footsteps coming down the stairs.
