After the aliens returned, it was significantly more quiet in the lunchroom and we all mulled over the implications of us being hand picked as future alien brides. I chewed on my lip for a while until Aryzox told me I would bite right through it.
We all reluctantly decided to go back to work, knowing that digging in the archives might not be the best decision since the allegiance of the aliens was not yet clear. If they were involved with the plot to trick people into coming here for mating, it wouldn't be in their interest for us to try to unravel the secrets behind it all.
So, I merely ruminated on our only true lead so far: Hannah Brown. There was no doubt that she knew about the aliens, especially after her oddly cryptic speech at the tree lighting. She was also the person with the most political authority in this town.
Unfortunately, I wasn't dumb enough to assume that we could find all the answers we wanted through our good, old-fashioned research. There were questions that only Mayor Brown herself could answer; like how she could have possibly known who to invite so that the aliens would choose them, or why the aliens kept just coming back here. There were too many unknowns and the only person who could probably give us even a clue of the bigger picture here didn't seem super approachable.
Suddenly a thought occurred to me, "Aryzox."
"Yes, darling star?"
"What happens after you get here? Once you have found me and hypothetically I accept our mating?"
"Once our mating is agreed upon, we spend the rest of our lives together!"
"That I'm already clear on," I rolled my eyes, "I mean what will our lives look like?"
It was quiet for a few moments and I kept my eyes trained out my office's window, making sure no one was walking so close they could hear me speaking to myself.
"We will bear children if you and nature are willing, we will live together, I will work and you will continue working if that is also your desire-"
"So we will stay here, on Earth?"
He paused again, "My position does not usually allow this, star."
"So, I have to go to space?" I whispered, thinking about my family.
My poor mother would have a heart attack if I just disappeared. I mean it wasn't like I could just tell her straight out, sorry mom, I have to go to a whole different planet because I agreed to some alien marriage thing with an intergalactic warrior. Plus, would my body even be able to live normally on a different planet? I mean I would apparently have to go vegan, which wasn't super pressing, but it was something to think about.
I didn't even know what Aryzox looked like, maybe he would be hideous. Would I have to produce ugly half-alien babies for him? I mean I had assumed thus far that his anatomy would match up with my idea of a human's anatomy, but what if he was just a massive tentacle or a slime monster?!
