"It took you two weeks to decide on a restaurant."
Vienna's wasn't the only restaurant in Wellnesse, but it was definitely the most popular and expensive one. And since Amber was a model she earned well enough to afford the food, which I was thankful for because damn these prices were insane.
She scoffed. "Girls have a hard time choosing where and what to eat, okay?" She said waving for a waiter. "Last time they chose, they doomed all of humanity."
As the waiter took our orders and left she pinned me with her stare. "So tell me about this Asher guy I have been hearing about from you."
Everyone in the group chat had messaged earlier that they were alive, although barely. It was Saturday, and as Kevin said last night, everyone was going for brunch around 12 noon. They had asked me and Evie in the chat room again to join them, but I have declined the offer. Evie hadn't even seen the message.
I gaped at her. "I literally only mentioned his name one time during our conversation." I said, incredulous. Amber smirked. "Your tone suggested your interest loud enough for me to hear." She said nonchalantly and I groaned.
"I hate you. You were bad enough when you were dating Mason, but now you are worse." I said and her smirk widened. "Well, as I am single at the moment I have lots of time to spend on other's love lives." She held up her hand when I went to speak. "Now spill what's the deal with him."
I glared at her but her smirk stayed in its place. I groaned. "Sometimes human males have these-" I said, making a face "-nice faces-" I exhaled forcefully "-and it's so stressful." Amber laughed and nodded.
"Yeah, I get it. I had to deal with your brother's for 3 years." She said and I scowled. "He was not that handsome." She rolled her eyes. "You are his sister. It goes against your very nature to agree to anything good said about him." She said and I narrowed my eyes. "You were the one who was blindly in love with him." I said and she chuckled.
Amber had always been more like a family than a friend, even before she and Mason were in the weird stage of relationship where both like each other but didn't believe their feelings were reciprocated. Whenever she and Mason had any arguement, my parents and I most of the times took her side.
It couldn't be helped. Amber was an easy person to like. She was pretty, graceful with a smile bright enough to light up a whole room, and despite coming from a rich family she wasn't spoilt. Mason once told me that her smile was the reason he fell for her in the first place.
Amber's relationship with her own parents was a littly rocky, but she managed to come to an understanding with them after Mason helped her with it. I didn't know full story about it because I didn't want to pry, but apparently they were a bit controlling with her.
As I looked at her devouring her food (something she wasn't normally allowed to do by her agent, considering how much her career depended upon her figure), I felt a twinge of sadness for the girl who has lost so much in the past few years. She was still struggling with the death of her own parents in a plane crash few months before she lost her love to a car one too. It was truly a miracle she had manage to put herself together.
We were almost finished with the food when Amber asked me. "How are your parents doing?" I stilled. I met her eyes and saw understanding there.
She sighed. "Why won't you say anything to them?" She asked. "Should I talk to them? I love them like my own parents Sarah, but I can't see you like this." I shook my head and she threw up her hand exasperatedly. "You are their only remaining child!"
I smiled at her outburst on my behalf, making her scowl at me. "Don't smile at me like that. Like I am a child having a tantrum." She grumbled.
"Do you know what's a wife called who has lost her husband?" I asked and she gave me a confused look, not knowing where I was going with this. "A widow. A child who has lost his parents is called an orphan." I said and glanced out of the window. There was a man standing near a car, smiling at the woman who was with him as they helped their son, who couldn't be more than 4 years, into their backseat of the car. My heart ached at the scene.
"But there's no word for a parent who have lost their kid." I said and turned to look at Amber. "Do you know why?" I asked. She didn't say anything. "It's because no word can describe it." I said. "There's no word in the world that can describe the excruciating pain that comes with losing a child." I know I said it was wrong to comapare pain and loss of people, but there truly was nothing that could even come close to losing your child. I knew at least that much even if I never experienced it. I turned back to see the family pull out of the parking. Amber stayed silent for another minute before sighing.
"You are right. I'm sorry." I smiled at her. "Good, now that that's done with I want an ice cream. And then I want to hear all about this new project you were talking about, and the new photographer who seems to have caught your interest." I teased her and she gaped at me. "I told you about that guy one time." I gave her a look which just made her roll her eyes. "He is handsome but I am definitely not interested," she said. I raised an eye and she glared at me.
"Well aren't you a smartass. And because of that, you would be paying for the ice cream."

A/n: Well, that definitely hit something. Sarah is only a child who has lost her brother not long ago, and yet she is able to be understanding of her parents and people around her to the point that she doesn't even think of her own pain most of the time, trying to help others recover or vent. She has been made to lock her own emotions and hurt so that she can take care of her grieving parents, but it makes me wonder just how long she would be able to go like this until something breaks.
As for Amber, this is definitely not the last time we have seen her. She is an important person for the Evans family, and she would definitely play a role in this story, especially because she herself hasn't deal with all the tragedies in her life well enough by herself.
