"In other news it seems President—"
"Mom, the powers out!" my sister cried from upstairs
I tapped my phone and turned on the flashlight, aiming it at my mother's face. She gave me wry smile ruffled my hair playfully
"That's my boy"
I scooted back by chair and propped myself up, rubbing my thumb along the tips of my fingers. "Uh huh, you know I should really get paid, seeing as how I'm always fixing whatever is broken in this house"
My mother somehow found the back of my head in the pitch blackness and smacked me "Paid? Boy you're living under my house and eating my food for free. I should be the one getting paid"
I chuckled under my breath and walked over to the breaker box. It was coated in dust, I tried finding clip to open it and I'm doing so learned first hand what a mouthful of dust, cobwebs and dead bugs tasted like. Oddly enough, they weren't too bad.
"Okay, let's see if I can work my magic again. Hah wait, I'm Liam, of course I can work my magic again"
"Owww" my head stung with an all too familiar sensation
"Stop talking to yourself and fix it" my mother teased, I'm pretty sure I could see her smiling.
"Uhh I don't think I can fix it to be honest mom. It's not the breaker. Hold on, lend me your phone"
"Why do you want my phone, use your phone"
"Well I would love to, but I'm a millennial and as such my phone isn't as dated as yours and therefore I have no radio "
"Oh okay, here you go" she hesitantly handed me the phone, only just swiping it back.
"Wait, you did not just call my phone dated"
"Whaaatt. Meeee. Never!" I quickly took it before letting out an all too loud laugh, which was quickly accompanied by, you guessed it.
"Mom!"
"Cara, honey there nothing I can do, just try to finish up and get downstairs. "
"Ah, the she devil let's out her cry"
"Do not call your sister a she devil"
I had finally found the radio app, which took way longer than I had expected. "We implore all civilians to stay indoors, I repeat, stay indoors. The Secretary of Defense has initiated a state of emer— Ahhhhh! "
"Oh god, no please...please!"
A loud crunching sound echoed from the phone. Although I'd never heard it before, it was oddly apparent. The sounds of bones cracking under the pressure of something, a low growl seemed to slither from the phone speakers and sent a chill up our spines.
The sound of footsteps plopped down the staircase "Mom, what happened to the —-"
CRUNCH
"Cara, honey?" her voice was shaky and laced with terror
"Cara, this isn't funny baby, where are you?"
I shun the light over to where the sound came from, my sister stepped forward, blood running down her arm and dripping from her fingers onto the hardwood floor. Her white nightgown slowly being dyed a deep red.
She opened her mouth, gurgling blood in an attempt to speak. It was inaudible, she reached towards my mother and weakly tried to push her away. She tried to speak again and at that time, I only faintly made out the word she was trying to say.
"R-run" she said weakly with the last of her strength.
The lights powered back on, my eyes burned from the intensity. After a few seconds, we could finally see clearly. The right side of my sister's skull was missing, I could see parts of her brain barely attached to the rest by thin lengths of flesh. The blood continued to stream down her body and unto the floor, she was standing in a puddle of blood that slowly motioned towards my feet. My mother was terrified of the sight, tears rolled down her face and she fell to the floor, kneeling in the blood of her child and losing herself to terror.
I was also terrified, a warmth ran down my leg and soon the crotch of my brown cargo shorts were soaked, A strong scent of ammonia floated on the air; but I couldn't be embarrassed, every other emotion in my head was overridden by one dominant feeling. Absolute fear. Hovering behind my sister was a large beast looking creature, it held my sister up and looked as if it were smiling. Its head resembled that of a wolf, it was layered in gray fur and its eyes burned yellow like the sun. It towered over me, taller than any man could possibly be. It's arms were disgustingly muscular, with veins so large that despite all its fur, they were still visible. They hung down past its knee, claws only inches away from the floor. It's legs resembled that of goat hooves except incredibly large, they were around the size of an gorilla's arms and it's weight slightly compressed the floor. It's tail whipped from left to right, it was long and sharp like that of a stingray."M-mom.." Fighting the fear running through my limbs, I reached for her shoulder
A wet sloshing sound echoed through the room, I heard my mother's winded voice but couldn't make out the words. She turned and looked at me, the corneas of her eyes became bloodshot and blood spewed from her chest. I gasped desperately for air, my legs and arms had turned to jelly. My mind was in chaos and I couldn't even find the strength to let out a scream. It bit into her throat, and stopped for a moment, running it's tongue over its snout as if it wanted to show me how delicious it thought my mother was, blood stained its mouth and its fur. Tilting its head, the beast aimed it's burning, yellow eyes at me. A low growl sent shivers down my spine. Maybe I was losing my mind but in that moment, within the soul shaking growl, I heard my mother's voice come from its mouth.
"L-Li......am-m"
My mother's body hit the ground with a loud thump and laid there lifeless.
The beast stepped towards me, and grabbed me by my hair, holding my head up so that I could see its face, it opened its mouth. Saliva ran down the sides of its mouth and dripped from its teeth.
It began pulling me along the floor and heading outside through the front door, my body instinctively tried to fight back, I clawed and punched at its arm, desperately trying to escape. It stopped, and released its grip on me. Without hesitation it tried to run through kitchen and out the backdoor."L-Liam" I heard a faint, expiring voice call out.
I turned to look behind me and a sharp pain ran through the back of my head. I fell to the floor and felt a hot sensation on the back of my skull. My vision began fading and the beast started to pull me along. A trail of blood followed me from where I fell. I shifted my head with all my strength and looked at the beast, it's ear twitched and it looked back at me, a smile stretched across its face and it opened its mouth
"Liam, baby" my mother's voice slipped out from the jaws of the monster
I cried silently and felt myself being pulled along again, my vision faded to black.
