The sun was beginning to set, painting the sky with a sea of reds and oranges. A light breeze wafted over her skin, already slick with a thin layer of sweat. The wheels of the skateboard skidded to a halt at the sound of her phone ringing. A sense of dread washed over the seventeen-year-old girl.

"Mar Luna Rodrigues Santana if you aren't back to this house this instant I will call the police to track you down." The other voice yelled into the receiver. Mar sighed, one day she planned to get up and leave, run off into the sunset. If only that were possible.

"Bueno, Bueno. En camino." (Okay, okay. On my way.) She flipped herself around and made her way back down the roughed up streets to the worn two-story house that she could only equate to hell.

You see, it's not like her parents didn't love her. She knew they did, but their marriage was in shambles. Her dad, the genius with an IQ of about 189 and several patents was only equivalent to an alcoholic these days. Only checking in to make sure she was at home before pouring himself a glass of whiskey and making himself at home on the couch for the remainder of the night.

Her mother was a completely different story. She was a tough case, she wanted the best for her children but also couldn't get past her past. Ironic isn't it? She wanted her kids to grow up not as she did but she made every notion she could to remind them of what she had to go through. Not to mention that every argument was someone else's fault, she demanded respect in a hypocritical and immature fashion. And what would happen if she didn't get it? Well, that's not something you wanted to find out.

Mar entered the house, slowly closing the creaking door behind her to try and not wake her siblings. She made her way to the kitchen to grab a granola bar and some water before heading upstairs to her shared bedroom with her younger sister.

"Mami is not happy with you." Her sister stood in the doorway to their room giving her a worried look.

"Yeah well, Mami can be mad at me for tonight. I'm tired and still need to finish my homework." She snapped back as she stripped down to her underwear before pulling on some pajama shorts and a baggy t-shirt.

Her sister huffed before brushing her teeth and climbing into bed. Mar muttered an apology for snapping at her. After finishing up her homework and cleaning up her room a bit, Mar trudged to her warm bed. Once in the soft covers, it didn't take long for sleep to come over her, bringing her to that wonderful place away from her reality.

"Mar... Mar..... MAR!"

If waking up wasn't pleasant enough already, having someone scream your name awake was even worse. Mar nudged the hand off of her shoulder before mumbling something about being awake.

"We only have forty minutes before we need to leave." her younger sister smirked before going and grabbing the other two young siblings. Mar heard hushed whispers before jumping awake to the sound of three kids screaming into her ear.

She looked over to the three and gave them the deadliest glare, "You may want to run now." she smirked as she watched her siblings run out of the room and down the stairs. Getting ready only took her about thirty minutes which gave her time to usher the others into the car. She rolled out of the driveway to another boring day at San Marino Senior High.

School was a complete clusterfuck, to be perfectly honest. Mar wasn't new by any means but people just didn't tend to gravitate towards her. Well, other than Sam. Many rumors had gone through the school that she was part of a gang, or did time in the county prison last year. She was labeled a 'bad girl' for reasons still unknown. Sure, she didn't have any problem with breaking a few knuckles and someone else's nose if they were trash-talking or degrading someone else.
