It was a summer evening. There was a big rain storm. Lily was running home. (She would've been cycling but she figured that she could walk to work). The night was horrendous, it was a storm. She was going home from work. She was wearing a yellow dress over a white apron. Her brown hair was soaking wet and tied into a ponytail. She walked by a field of green. There was a fence in front of the field. She looked to her left and saw a house. The house was white with green shutters, there was a porch surrounding the house. The lights were on near the porch. There was also a swing hanging from the ceiling of the roof. The swing was out of control and was moving aggressively because the wind from the storm had been so bad.
Lily ran towards the house. She was aware of the danger she would be putting herself through by going into a stranger's house. But she thought that going into a stranger's house would be much safer than staying out in a cold stormy night. She knocked heavily and quickly on the brown wooden door. A woman opened the door. She was a middle aged woman and she looked about fifty. She had brown hair down to her shoulders. There were tiny streaks of grey in the roots of her hair. She was wearing a brown dress with a grey cardigan. Her smile was warm.
"Hello Dear, how can I help you?" She asked. Her tone of voice was soothing. Lily didn't think she seemed suspicious at all.
"Hi, can I come in please? The storm is really bad and I don't think I can make it home from here." Lily said quickly as she was out of breath.
"Of course you can. You can stay in here until storm has died down."
"Thank you so much." Lily was so relieved.
Lily walked into the house. It was very warm and welcoming. To the left of the house, there was a brown wooden staircase. The wood was shiny. There was a white door on the wall, in front of the stairs. The door was closed.
To her right, there was a white arch door. She smelled warm stew lingering in the hallway. The walls were a cream colour. She could hear people talking in the lounge in front of her.
"My name is Lucy Parker by the way."
"I'm Lily Bennett." She said while shaking her soft, delicate hand.
"My family and I were just about to have dinner, would you like to join?"
"Yes please, I am really hungry."
"You are soaking wet, why don't you go upstairs and get changed. You can wear my daughter's clothes."
"Thank you so much."
"Come with me and I'll show you where you can change"
Lucy lead the way up the stairs. There was faint creek on the steps as they went up the stairs. It was barely noticeable. They walked up the stairs. Lucy turned left. Lily was trailing behind her. The colour of the walls were also creamy. There was a closed door in front of them. Apart from that door, there were five other doors. Two in front, two on the left and one on the right. The hallway was quite large. It was a U-shape. The doors were all closed except one which had white walls from what Lily could see.
They walked towards the first door on the left. Lucy opened the door. When Lily stepped inside she saw a white wooden dresser on her left. It had two small drawers on top with three long drawers on the bottom. The handles were a shiny silver. In front of her was a large king size bed. The sheets were white with a floral pattern on top. It had a grey throw covering the bottom half of the bed.
"This is your room in case the storm lasts all night. I'm just going to fetch a change of clothes for you. I shouldn't take too long."
"OK, thank you"
As Lucy exited the room. Isabella took a minute to herself. She was fascinated by how large and beautiful this house was.
How could one be so nice she thought.
When Lucy came back, she handed her a plain white t-shirt and skinny jeans, she also gave her a long sleeved pyjama top with grey stripes with matching trousers. She also gave her a towel which was underneath the clothes.
"Here you go, I also brought some pyjamas just in case."
"Thank you so much"
Lily quickly dried herself and put on some clothes.
"The Dinner is ready!" A man's voice called out.
"Coming!" A lady's voice called. Lily walked downstairs and into the kitchen. When she got there she saw a family of five and they were all sitting together. Lucy was handing out the stew to each family member. Lily sat down and had a quick look around the kitchen. The kitchen was large. It looked very modern, it had shiny grey cabinets with silver handles, the island table was also grey with white marble on the top. On top of the island table was a fruit bowl containing apples, pears, bananas and plums. The chairs that accompanied the table were tall and the base of the chair was round and silver, the bottom of the chair was also round with a low round back. The fridge looked very modern, it was grey and there was a water and ice dispenser. The tiles were large and white.
The dining area was absolutely beautiful. There was an oval shaped glass table with white wooden legs. The chairs were transparent which had metal legs. Lily thought that it was a bit weird that the kitchen was the only room that looked modernised. She figured that the house recently had renovations and the family decided to have the kitchen renovated first. Lily sat down on one of the chairs, she saw a boy and a girl sitting across from each other. They looked like teenagers. The girl had blonde, curly hair and the boy had short brown hair. Sitting beside the boy she saw another woman who looked about twenty years old. She had long brown hair, with bangs and she was wearing a floral shirt with a beige cardigan over it. At the end of the table a middle aged man was sitting there. He had green eyes and a grey beard. He had short, grey hair.
Lucy placed a bowl of stew in front of Lily.
"Here you go, Lily."
"Thank you."
Lucy sat down and introduced Lily to the family.
"Everyone, this is Lily, she'll be staying with us until the storm had passed. She'll also be joining us for dinner. Lily, this Jack, Emma and my oldest daughter, Zoe."
"Hello." Lily said shyly.
"Hi." Everyone answered at the same time.
"Hi, I'm Joshua." The middle aged man said. He had a nice smile.
Lily began to eat her stew. As they were finished eating, somebody rang the doorbell.
BRING
Lily jumped. Lucy stood up to get the door.
"That's probably Adam." Joshua said.
Lucy opened the door,
"Where have you been? I was worried about you. Did you not get my calls?" Her voice was high pitched and she sounded really worried.
"Sorry, the storm was really bad so it took a while to get back home." Adam said. He was soaking wet. The water from his clothes were dripping on the floor. Lucy ran upstairs to get him a towel. Lucy came back down with a white towel in her left arm and handed it to Adam.
"Thanks." he said and ran up the stairs.
Lucy walked back into the dining room and sat down.
"Sorry, that was my son Adam. He's always late to dinner and always has an excuse." She laughed.
After dinner, Lily went to her room to change. Just as she was about to get changed, someone knocked lightly on the door.
"Can I come in?"
"Yeah,"
Adam opened the door and handed Lily a purple toothbrush.
"Here, it's a spare one. You can use it."
"Thanks."
"We haven't properly met, I'm Adam."
"I'm Lily." They shook hands.
Adam had ocean blue eyes and brown, spiky hair. He was wearing a plain grey t-shirt with a navy zipped hoodie over it. He was wearing black jeans.
"Do you work at the café near here? I think I recognize you."
"Yes I do. I'm just working there temporarily. I need a job so can pay off my college tuition."
"Oh, what are you studying?"
"English. I want to be a teacher."
"Really?"
"Yes. You look surprised. Why?"
"I just didn't picture you as a teacher at all." He laughed.
"Why?"
"I just pictured you doing something different than being just a teacher."
"What about you? What do you want to be?"
"Adam, you have to do the dishes." Jack called out.
"Coming." Adam answered.
"Bye." Lily said.
"Bye" he said while closing the door.
RING! RING! RING!
It was Lily's phone. She checked to see who was calling her. It was room mate/best friend Rachel. Lily thought She's probably worried about me since she has no idea where I am.
Lily picked up the phone.
"Where have you been? I've been calling you for a while and you've finally picked up." She had and angry tone of voice, but worried at the same time.
"Sorry, the signal is probably really bad so I had no idea."
"Where are you?"
"Don't worry, I'm safe. I'm just in a stranger's house."
"You're at a stranger's house? How could you be so dumb? What if you get kidnapped? What if you get murdered?"
"Relax it's fine. If I see any red flags I'll go home."
"Well you'd be-----"
"Hello?"
Lily couldn't hear anything. She just heard recurring beeping noises. She hung up and then got dressed.
It was 01.03 a.m. Lily couldn't sleep. The storm had stopped. She could hear light raindrops falling down and tapping against the window. She was wide awake. She got up and walked down stairs so she could get a glass of water. She walked into the kitchen, turned on a lamp and got a glass cup. As she was pouring herself a glass of water she could hear footsteps coming down the stairs. Lily was scared. She put the glass water down on the counter and froze. She couldn't move. Adam walked in and Lily sighed with relief..
"Hey, are you OK?" Adam asked.
"Oh it's just you. Yeah, I'm fine."
"Did you think I was a murderer or something?"
"Something like that."
They both laughed.
"Can't sleep?" he asked.
"Yeah, I don't know why." Lily explained while drinking water.
"Well, I don't know what to tell you, sometimes you can sleep, sometimes you can't."
They both giggled.
"You never told me what you wanted to be?"
"I want to be a writer, I want to write plays."
"Ooh, how impressive." she teased.
"Yeah I'm pretty passionate about it. I'm thinking about moving to New York to pursue it."
"Maybe I'll be able to watch one of your plays."
He smiled.
"Tell me about yourself." He asked. Lily thought it was a bit random but since he knows nothing about her, she thought that it wasn't THAT random.
"OK, well. I was born here in Portland. My mother raised me because my Dad died when I was young."
"Aw... I'm sorry for your loss."
It's OK. It was a long time ago." "I loved to read and I loved to play the guitar and sing when I was growing up."
"Do you still play?"
"Just a little."
"That's great. Can I hear you play a song one day?"
"I don't know... maybe."Lily yawned. It was 01.57 a.m.
"You should go to bed. It's really late." he said. "I don't want to hold you back from your precious sleep." he sarcastically said. Lily smiled and said.
"OK. Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Lily walked up the steps, went to her bed and fell asleep.
