"Affection is not measured when both take care of each other. It is measured when one ignores and the other still cares.."
"The Vendor Of Sweets" by Mr. Narayan Murthy, author of the bestselling "Swami and Friends" is a bittersweet story revolving around a sixty year old sweet vendor and widower, Jagan and his son, Mali.
Jagan is used to a cosy routine everyday and dotes on his son. As age takes over both father and son, Mali loses interest in the sweet shop and crushes Jagan's dreams of him inheriting the sweet shop by aspiring to become a writer. Jagan is a typical father, worried about his son's studies but is rather scared of Mali and doesn't correct him when he should have.
As a result, Mali grows in quite in his own way, not caring for his father at all. However, Jagan doesn't take the hint and continues to hover around his son.
Exasperated, Mali takes off to America and bring home a girl whom he claims to be his wife. Jagan discovers horrifying Western customs which bring in a tinge of colour in his colourless life.
The story features many twists and turns, some of which include Jagan's story when he was a nervous groom himself.
When you start feeling bored,Mr. Murthy cooks up something and you can't help pondering on what happens next.In other words, it's a must read for all
