New Girl

Leana was late. She ran down the hall to the Leapmaster, panting. She was always waking up just a little too late, but that, well, just that tiny half hour took its toll. She skidded to a halt in front of the glowing crystals.                        

"Foxfire," she gasped. The leaping crystal lowered before her, casting her in its light. Her nexus glowed on her wrist as she was swept into the light.

Leana glimmered into Foxfire. She spotted a familiar figure walking with a blond stranger ahead of her.

"Dex! Hey! Wait up!" she called. "Come on!"

The duo slowed, then stopped.

"Leana, you have to stop sleeping in! We're gonna be late for Dame Alina's announcements! Do you want detention?"

"Ugh, Dex, of course not." She caught up to him and the stranger. "And who is this lovely lady?"

"Hi. I'm Sophie. Sophie Foster," she said shyly. She had brown (brown!) eyes and had a strange air about her.

"Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but... you don't have blue eyes." Leana said, astonished. There had never been someone like her here before. No one like her in the entire lost cities!

"Yeah. I was raised by humans. But you don't have blue eyes either."

"Yep! Maybe cause I am like the only gay elf ever. Well, maybe not ever... whatever. Yeah."

Dex butted in. "Wow. You know she's a total stranger."

"Yep. Loud and proud."

The trio had reached their lockers.

"Hey Biana!" Leana called. Her locker was right next to Biana's. Wow. Biana's amazing eyes...

"Hi Leana! How's my BFF?" Biana basically shouted.

"Woah! Loud much? Anyway, I'm great. This is Sophie. She's new."

"Hi again." Sophie murmured.

"Hey, nice to see you again. My brother isn't in our year, but you can totally sit with us at lunch."

"Um." Sophie blushed.

"She totally likes him." Leana laughed. "Seriously, like what do you guys see in boys? They are so weird, present company included."

"Thanks, Leana. Wait, what?" Dex started to talk, but hey. She needed to get to class before Dame Alina's stupid announcement.

"Bye Dex! See you guys at lunch!" 

Leana ran away, giggling.

"Leana, wait!" Sophie ran after her. "I just wanted to ask you something."

"Yes, but can it wait? I have to be early."

Sophie blushed. 

"Oh, yeah it can. Sorry."

"Don't be stupid, I was kidding! Like I'd ever be early. What is it?"

"Um, well, is it true that there are no queer elves?"

"Yes. Well, except me and like two others ever. The council pretends to be accepting, but you notice that the match list doesn't have preferred gender."

"Match... list?" Sophie's eyes widened. "We're told who to date?"

"Oh god, you are basically a human. Yes, but you can disobey. If you want to be ostracized forever." Leana laughed mercilessly. 

"Um, then do I not come out to people?" Sophie blushed again.

"Well, I mean, I did. I literally shouted at my brother's planting that... wait, seriously? Dude! Lesbian? Wait, you like Fitz. Bi? Pan? Omni? Trans? Gender fluid? Fluid? Androgynous? Nonbinary? Dude! Spill!" Leana grinned.

"Well, I'm bi. And I don't like Fitz."

"Oh, sure, tell yourself that. You totally like him. Anyway, I'm going to actually be here when  Alina's announcements start."

"What?"

"Sorry, Dame Alina. Keefe and I call her that. Bye!"

"Who's Keefe?"

"Lunch, Sophie, lunch!" Leana rushed off.
