I have a best friend. My ONLY friend. We do everything together and can talk about everything. People tell me I'm mad to trust her. A lot of the times they tell me to get a real friend but she is my real friend. Sometimes they tell me she's a danger to my sanity. I don't think that at all actually. As a matter of fact she keeps me from going insane.
We have a lot of things in common, for example: We have the same interests, same sense of humor, and favorite topics to discuss. She really is a good friend. Sometimes when nobody is around we like to pull pranks together and even though sometimes we take it too far, we have lots of fun doing it.
One afternoon while we were sitting around, A cat walked past us. The cat appeared to belong to somebody, it had on a purple collar with an address and the name of the pendant. Emily and I looked at each other with the same idea in mind. We thought of the perfect prank to play on all of the kids in the neighborhood.
We headed over to my parents' garage next to our house. Inside the garage we find the proper tools for our best prank yet. Emily grabbed the pliers, the tape, copper wires and the rubber gloves. We were planning an afternoon of fun and delight. We lived in a small town, rarely anything ever happened but it was nice and pretty, something almost out of a brochure. Most importantly of all, it was the perfect place for what Emily and I were planning."Hey Emily, do you think people will appreciate the joke?" After all, people don't really understand our sense of humor, they call us weird." Emily stares at me and smiles. She puts her hand on my shoulder to confirm that everything will be fine. I guess I was just so excited I became anxious. "Of course people will like it, I reassure myself. Emily put on the rubber gloves and took the copper wires and went to work. If anybody knew how to do anything and everything it was my friend Emily.
Hours went by and we were finally finished. The prank had been set and the cat was a (purr-fect) test subject for our new machination. I was excited once more once I realized that this prank would be the bestest prank of all. As we got ready to present it, I kept thinking to myself, what if....just what if...they DON'T like it? I knew better than to doubt Emily but the question was still concerning. So Alas the time to present was here and we could barely contain ourselves. Emily's rubber gloves glistening with the end result of our hard work. We were excited and proud of our splendid art. I handed her the pliers to make one more adjustment before the presentation. We walk outside with a box of wood. Bigger than a shoebox but too small for anything bigger than a small dresser. Our brows sweating and our hands shaking with anticipation, We finally get ready to pull the biggest prank in our neighborhood yet.
We already had a reputation for jokes and antics around the neighborhood. People almost already knew what to expect from us. Thus it wasn't hard to get their attention and get them gathered. "Emily, I'm a little nervous. This joke is on a whole new level, I really don't want to be hated after this.....especially after all the thought and love we put into it. She didn't say anything. She rarely ever did, which also meant I had to give the speech. "Hey !!, you guys want to see a magic trick?" The kids almost came to a full halt when they heard me speak. "I have a magic trick to show you guys, Emily and I made it!" As always the kids had an expression on their faces as if they tire of our antics. Some of them were puzzled. They gathered around the garage, some in their skateboards others in bicycles. "Emily and I would like to show you what we made, we think you'll be pleased!" They looked at me as if I was crazy, others laughed at me. I wasn't crazy..."For the show tonight I will show you guys a cat !" "What's so great about this cat you ask? Well he's a -on the outside- cat." Again they were confused as to what I was talking about. I whisper to Emily that this is our moment. We reveal our new art, from the bottom of our hearts. I pull the cover and yell "SURPRISE!!. Full of excitement I just couldn't wait for their reactions. As I looked at the crowd they were....they were.....disgusted. They were shocked, they were amazed. The cat stood pressed on the back of the box, copper wires holding his flesh and skin aside on both sides revealing its guts and insides. A yet still beating heart and a fur less creature in agony. The kids yelled, they screamed, they cried. Didn't they appreciate us? Our art? The kids called me names. They cursed and raged at me.
I didn't know what to do. I began to panic. I look at Emily and... she's gone, she's not there. Where did she...? Oh. That's why they laugh at me. That's why they make fun of me and call me names. I look down and I'm wearing the rubber gloves Emily had. The same tools in my pocket she used for our surprise. Emily was.....me. She never existed she was all in my head. I did all of those bad things. The pliers, the cat, the wires, the gloves, all me. They threw rocks at me and yelled at me "WEIRDO! FREAK! YOU'RE INSANE! GET OUT OF HERE!"Weeks later I got taken away from my home and into an asylum for mentally ill patients. I hated it here. I was alone and had nobody to talk to. I had no friends here, no family and no hope in the slightest.
Weeks went by, even months and I haven't talked to anyone. Not like they could understand or talk back. Everyone here was trapped in their own mental cages without a single clue of their surroundings of the real world. I really hate this place.
One day I overheard the nurses and orderlies whispering and talking about a new patient they're bringing in. By the looks on their faces and the expressions of their actions it seems as if this new patient was a handful. I continue to listen to their conversation and whoever this person was, they sure as hell caused a ruckus to end up here and make the staff worry like they do. I hear them speak of mutilations to small animals, and burnings of tree houses and even pushing a boy into the street to get hit by a car. Luckily the little boy survived.
The next day the same conversations continue. The only difference is that now, they seem a lot more tense about the subject. I ignore the whispers this time and head over to the lobby for a solo board game. Hours go by and still nobody to play with, as if they had the sense to play I realize that even hoping for a sane person at this moment was asking for too much. After playing with it I decide to pack it back up in the box and just before I finish putting it away, I hear the staff yelling in announcement by the entrance. "OPENING THE GATE FOR NEW ARRIVAL !!" It seems as if the mystery person has arrived.I notice a person being brought in by one of the guards, a girl in handcuffs. I couldn't see her face, just long black hair and dirty fingernails. "We found a room just for her, should keep her out of trouble." Says one of the nurses to the security guard. As they escort her to her room I realize something about the girl. Something eerie, forgotten. Something familiar. Something.....WAIT...could it be!?!! No...it can't it just can't be! She looks directly at me almost as if she knew what I was thinking and just before she disappears she leaves with a smirk. IT'S HER !! It's really her ! She looked just like her !! The hair, the face , THE GIRL FROM MY IMAGINATION !! My best friend.......Emily
