“Freak!” “Emo!” “Loser!” “Go cry, emo kid!” These are things I hear every day. Just because I’m quiet around people who aren’t my friends, and I tend to wear darker clothes, people make assumptions. Welcome to my life, where you can’t do anything without being labeled. Can’t be skinny without being anorexic, can’t be pretty without being fake, and can’t be quiet without being emo.
First day of school, and I’m already in detention. Want to know why? Let’s backtrack a little.
August 21st, 2012, 8:23 AM.
I looked at my schedule again, making sure I was at the right room. ‘Yup. This is it.’ I thought to myself. I moved my bangs out of my eyes, and walked in. “Hello, Miss Evangeline. Thank you for deciding to join us today, there’s one seat left in the back.” The teacher greeted me, and motioned to a seat in the back. I frowned and went to my seat. I wasn’t frowning because of where my seat was, I was frowning because of who sat next to me. Daniel Edwards. Star quarterback of the football team, and my ex best friend. Yes, ex best friend. He was my best friend, like you would never see us apart. Then, well, then we got into high school, and being the most popular guy got to him.
“Hey, Ev.” I heard a whisper. I looked up, and sighed. “Hi.” “Hey, um, it’s been weird not having you around.” I got my pencil and notebook out of my bag. I opened the notebook and wrote, ‘if you want to talk, write a note. I don’t want to get in trouble.’ And I slid it to him. Suddenly, a shadow loomed over us. I looked up. “Miss Evangeline, Mister Daniel. Would you like to share what’s so important that you have to talk about while I’m lecturing, to the whole class?” I looked at Daniel, frowning. “Uh..” He just smirked and stood up. “We were just saying how badly were going to beat the other team at the football game tonight!” The whole class cheered, so I cheered with them, just quietly.
After class, Daniel followed me to my locker. We were talking about the summer when one of his teammates, whose name I forgot, walked up to us. “What are you doing hanging out with that..freak?” He scowled at Daniel, and Daniel just glared right back at him. If looks could kill, that other guy would be dead. “She’s not a freak, Josh. And I don’t see how it’s any of your business why I’m hanging out with her.”
I just stood there, not knowing what to do. Daniel was blocking my locker, so I couldn’t get my book and go to class. I was watching them argue for a while, and then noticed Daniel’s jaw muscle twitch. Oh great, he’s pissed. I sighed. “Daniel.” He glanced at me and grunted. “Calm down and get off my locker.” He moved, but didn’t calm down until Josh left.
August 21, 2012. 2:03 pm.
I sighed. Last class of the day. I walked into class and sat near the door. A minute before the bell rang, I was shoved out of my seat. “Move, sophomore.” I looked up and saw a guy with light brown hair and black eyes. I sat back in my chair, and resumed what I was doing. “You’re in my seat.” I didn’t look up. “Where’s your name?” I glanced up after a moment of silence. He looked confused. “You said this is your seat, so where’s your name?” I looked up at him, and he looked pissed. ‘Great,’ I thought to myself. He leaned over my desk and looked me in the eye. “Get out.” He growled. I stared back at him evenly. “I got here first, and there are plenty of seats left.” He growled again and opened his mouth, probably about to argue some more, when the bell rang and the teacher walked in.
“Mister Alexander, please sit down.” “But, this freak is in my seat!” He yelled back at the teacher. “There are plenty of seats left, now I suggest you sit down, before I write you both a detention. I am not in the mood for a smart-mouth today.” I looked up at her wide-eyed. “But that isn’t fair! I didn’t do anything!”
A few minutes later, the teacher was angry, and I had detention. Not the best way to start off the school year. Now every teacher thought I was a smart-mouth.
Detention. August 22, 2012.
So, here I sit, in detention with Alexander. Today was another long day, and I deserved some music. I pulled out my iPod and hit play. Immediately, the sound of Andy Sixx filled my ears. Man, I love him. Him and Ashley are my favorite in Black Veil Brides. “No iPods.” I frowned and put my iPod up.
For the next hour, Alexander and I were stuck in the same room together. When we were released, I went to my car. Right when I was turning the corner, I got shoved into a wall. I flinched, but I wasn’t like this hasn’t happened before. “Get me in trouble again, and I’ll pound your face in.” I sighed. Alexander. “Got it?” He growled. I rolled my eyes. What’s with this guy and growling? “Sure. Now, can I leave?” He shoved me again and stormed off to his car.
When I got home, I went straight to my room and locked the door. I put my iPod on the dock, and hit play. Again, Andy’s voice filled my ears. I turned it up as loud as my mother would let me, and sat at my desk. What to do now? I sighed and pulled out my phone. I had two missed calls and ten texts. I read the texts, eight from Amber wondering where I was and if I could come over, and two from Daniel asking how detention was. I texted Amber: ‘jst got out head 2 ur place in a few’ and hit send.
I packed my bag, grabbed my iPod, and went downstairs and saw a head at the couch. Great, dad’s home. I snuck out the door and drove to Amber’s.
Amber’s house. 5 pm.
“Hey!” Amber squealed. I laughed at her. We were in her back yard having a water balloon fight, even though it was way too cold. I had just hit her in the head with a huge balloon. Amber has been my best friend since I was in 1st grade and she was in 2nd. Suddenly, my head felt soaked. I gasped at the chill, and smiled BB-style at her. “Oh Amber!” I sang. She looked at me right when I threw another balloon at her. This weekend was going to be great.
Evangeline’s locker. August 25th, 8:00 am.
I was putting my things in my locker, but yet again, I got shoved. My head almost went into my locker. I turned and yelled “Hey! Watch where you’re going dumb-” I cut myself off and frowned. “What do you want now, Alexander?” I turned back to my locker and got my things, then turned back to him, he still hadn’t said anything. I gave him the iciest glare I could muster up, and my blue eyes helped. He stared back at me, his black eyes boring into me.
