Zach's Point Of View
"Yeah, I'll text you later, Man," I say to my best friend Charlie as I walk to my car. It's really cold today so I jack up the heat. I get home and go to my room to start my homework. My Mom is still at work. My father isn't in the picture. All I know is that he's a deadbeat who left my mom when she found out she was pregnant with me. I'm in the middle of doing my math homework when I get a call. I check my phone. Brittany is calling me. She is my girlfriend and this is the first time she's ever called me. I answer it cause I don't know if it's an emergency or not.
"Hey Babe, what's wrong?" I ask. "I need to talk to you," Brit says. "That's never a good sentence," I say. "I know but I need to say this. I have a lot going on with school and cheerleading, we have a competition coming up and I just don't have time for a relationship. We need to break up. I still love you. Maybe we can get back together after all this is done, but right now it's overwhelming. I'm sorry." She says. It took me a second to process.
"You're breaking up with me. We can make it work. I can help you be less overwhelmed. I can help you with school stuff." I say trying to hold back tears. I don't cry, hardly ever do I cry.
"It just isn't working Zach I'm sorry. I have to get going coach is getting mad because we are starting now. I'm sorry, this is just how it has to be." She says and then hangs up. I look at my phone hoping for it to be some sick prank. I know deep down inside that it's not though. She has been doing a lot of homework. We haven't been able to hang out since November because she's been over her head in homework.
I cry for a little bit and then finish my homework. I go downstairs to start making dinner. Cooking might help me feel better. My mom will be home in an hour. She's a nurse but she works at a doctor's office so she doesn't have the late nights like hospital nurses.
My mom walks into the house just as I'm putting dinner on the table. "Hey, honey. How was your day?" She asks. I breakdown just at those words. She rushes over to me and hugs me. "What's wrong?" She asks. "B-B-Brittany broke up with me," I say. "Why on earth would she do that?" Mom asks. "She said she had too much stuff to do and it was overwhelming her. With Cheer and school work. She said maybe we can get back together. I'm hoping we do. Mom, I love her, I just have to give her space. In order for me to get her back, I have to give her space." I say, deep breathing to stop crying.
"Honey, I can't say I know what you are going through, but I want you to know that I am here for you. You can talk to me about anything. I love you. It's just you and me in this world. I said that when you were born. It's just me and you, and no matter what, I'll always be here." Mom says. "Thanks. Now let's eat. All this crying made me hungry." I say. Once we finish eating Mom cleans the dishes and I take a shower before going to bed.
NEXT DAY
"Hey, Zach guess what?! We have a sub in math."Charlie says. "Sweet, I needed some form of good news," I say. "Why?" He asks. "Brit dumped me because she's overwhelmed with Schoolwork and cheer. I understand but it's still upsetting though." I say. "That sucks dude. I'm sorry." Charlie says. "Thanks," I say. We walk into Math and I overheard a group of girls talking about Brit. I listen in obviously. "It's a good thing she dumped Zach, he probably would have dumped her if he found out she was cheating on him with Michael. I mean, Zach's the only one who would put up with her brattiness." One girl says. I know this girl only tells the truth. Senior year she'll probably win most brutally honest.
Now I'm pissed. There is no way we are getting back together ever. I know it sounds like a Taylor Swift song but it's not. I'm not going to bother talking to Brit or Michael, he plays basketball, he's an ass but as most people say he's nice looking. I don't get it. I don't think he's nice looking. I always look at the personality before I say that they are nice looking and since he's an ass he isn't nice looking at all but if Brittany and Michael want to be together who am I to stop them it's not like she's been cheating on me or something...Oh, wait she fucking did.
"I'm sorry man, I was listening in too. Do you want to go to the Ice Rink to blow off some steam, keep us going since we don't have hockey practice today? "Yeah sure. That might be good." I say. "Charlie is a good friend. I've known him since kindergarten. His family and my family grew really close to each other. School ends and we go to my house to do some homework before going to the Ice Rink.
