Eleven marched up to Mike after Max's pep talk to her.
"I dump your ass!" she said, loud enough for all surrounding people to hear, earning a few concerned stares towards Mike.
"O-oh, can we talk about this later because I had something to tell you," whispered Mike.
"Walkie-talkie at 7:00, okay?" El whispered back.
Mike nodded and silently turned to unlock his bike from the rack. He jumped on and rode off with Lucas.
El smiled back at Max, but she wondered what it was that Mike wanted to tell her. Max hugged her, which caused her face to heat up until it felt like her face was about to explode. Mike never made her feel like her face was going to explode. Sure, he made her cheeks warm a little, but that soon got less and less intense as time went on.
"M-maybe we could go to Ships Ahoy later, El," said Max, her face visibly blushing after she noticed El was blushing.
"You already got me all of these clothes. I think I'm fine. Thanks," El said, wanting to just curl up and hide from the awkwardness that the conversation and spiraled into. "Let's go to your house and have a sleepover." It was the best she could do to make up for the awkwardness and the clothes, and she couldn't stop the words from spilling out of her mouth.
Max agreed and brought her home to find Billy wasn't there. She laughed it off thinking he was off with some girl he saw at the pool. As per usual.
They went into Max's room. It was still light out, so her room was illuminated by the soft golden light of the sun. The room was mainly light colors and had a queen bed and dresser in it.
"El, we should spy on Billy. He's probably out with some girl and we should see who it is," Max said.
El and Max got the static of the TV set up and wrapped a blindfold around El's eyes. El concentrated on finding Billy.
She saw the blond standing over a girl who was screaming. He turned around, sensing her presence and gave her a look of despair with a mix of slight insanity. El ripped the blindfold off and was breathing heavily.
"H-he was with a girl and she was screaming," El said breathlessly.
"Was it good screams or bad screams?" Asked Max, playing with El's hair to calm her down.
"What are good screams?"
"Oh, uh, you'll probably find out eventually."
El immediately knew what she was talking about, but decided to act innocent. She nodded and they returned to Max playing with her hair. "It was bad screams, I think. Billy knew I was there too."
"I'm so sorry. I have no idea what that means. I'm hoping you're safe though."
El leaned her head into Max's hand to make her keep playing with her hair. Max smiled and kept petting and pulling through El's hair.
Billy didn't come home that night. Max wasn't worried though. He'd always stay out late.
It was 7:00 and they heard Mike's voice come from the walkie-talkie. El picked it up and held it out so both she and Max could hear it.
"El? Are you there?" said Mike's staticky voice.
"Yup, I'm here."
"Are you alone?"
"Y-yeah."
"I-I was going to break up with you anyways. I was only getting a gift for you because I felt it would soften the blow."
"Oh! Why?"
"B-because I like W- " the rest of the name was too staticky to make out.
"Who?"
"W-Will! Will... I haven't told him yet."
El looked over at Max, confused. "You can do that? Be with the same 'species'?"
"Y-yeah, I think so. I've never actually thought about it." That was a lie, Max had been thinking about it since she met El.
"Well, I think about it a lot. I didn't know that Mike thought it too."
Max stopped petting El's head in surprise. El whimpered and push her hand up against Max's hand again. Max's face felt like it was on fire and was bright red. She didn't continue petting El's head but did let her lay on her lap.
"Do you want to get ready to get comfortable?" asked Max, desperately trying to get a few seconds of calmness from her heart, which was beating a million times per second.
"Sure, but I forgot pajamas... do you have any I could wear?"
"Y-yes." All she could think about was El wearing her pajamas.
"Are you okay?"
"Mhmm"
Max went to her closet and grabbed two pairs of shorts and two old t-shirts.
El went to the bathroom to change and Max changed in her room. El was quicker than Max, so she ended up walking in on Max changing.
"Ah! Sorry, Max!" she said covering her eyes, her face blossomed with heat.
"It's fine! I'm dressed now," she replied.
El looked at Max's face. It was bright pink. This made her blush harder if that was possible. Max immediately saw the blush on El's face and knew that something was up with her. Max shook her head, deciding to ignore it.
"Well, the thing about Billy was... strange, but I'm sure it will be okay." Max twirled her hair to make herself stop thinking of El.
"Okay, that makes sense. I hope the girl is okay though. Her screams were loud."
"Oh, I'm sure she'll be fine," Max said, laughing because of El's innocence.
"Alright." El looked at Max nervously.
When Max suggested sleep, El was definitely ready for it. It was getting late and she didn't know if she could handle the awkwardness anymore.
Max laid awake while El fell asleep on the floor. She had given El one of her blankets and pillows, so she'd be comfortable on the rug. All Max could think about was the way El's lips might feel on hers, but immediately shook herself out of it because she was raised to think it was wrong for her to do such a thing.
Thoughts of El bombarded her until sleep finally took over and ceased her thoughts. She was calm until she started dreaming.
