I can't believe the words that are coming out of his mouth. "What did you say?"
Austin Powell's face is red. "Well, I was just wondering if you'd maybe . . .like to go out with me?"
Austin and I are in eighth grade. It's been a year since I last saw my crush, Jaxson. But right now, I'm focused on Austin.
"Um . . ." I say. I'd never had a boyfriend before. And I had so desperately wanted one, but all the guys I had ever liked just didn't feel the same. Suddenly, I see my best friend Taylor a few yards behind Austin. She has a giant smile on her face and she's motioning for me to go on.
"Sure!" I say at last. Austin gets a giant grin on his face.
"Okay," he says. "Are you free Friday at around 8:30?"
"Sure," I say. "Where will we be going?"
"Um . . ." says Austin. I can tell that he hadn't thought of that yet. "Maybe we could go get some ice cream or something at that new place Be Cool?"
"Sounds good," I said, my face beaming with joy. "See you then." I turn around and Austin walks away. I wait until he's out of earshot, then run up to Taylor, screaming. "Oh my god!" I say.
"You go, girl!" Taylor gives me an encouraging hug and we start talking. "A date with Austin Powell," she says. She shakes her head, smiling. "I'm so happy for you. You know Kayla's always had the hots for him?" I know that Taylor is trying to make me feel even better. She's knows that I think Kayla is utterly obnoxious and that I, frankly, kind of hate her. "She is going to be so jealous!" says Taylor. We scream together.
"Oh my god," I say. "I can't wait for Friday!"
