We were on the road again.

The highway led us further and further out of town. The petrol station on the outskirts of town seemed like days behind us even though it was only a few hours. It was about 8:00 PM now, like most people would be in this situation, I couldn't sleep. The hard plastic interior of the car wasn't helping. instead I was looking at the stars. I had seen them before but not like this, the lack of electricity meant there was no lights to stop the stars shining through. it was breathtaking, but all good things have to end. I eventually let the exhaustion take over and fell asleep.

I woke up when we arrived at a small farm house, it was about 8:30PM. Normally dark = scary, but in this situation dark = terrifying.

"Do we have a torch?" asked Rose.

"We might in our bag," Niki replied, it was true we hadn't searched the bag fully.

We unzipped another pocket of the bag we hadn't opened. In there was matches, more water and food, seeds for growing vegetables, good running shoes, and warm clothes. We opened the next zipper and found blankets, A FREAKING MURDER AXE, batteries, sleeping bags, and a torch.

"yeah, we got one," I said excitedly.

"Can I have that axe Mel?" Jason asked before I repacked everything.

"Sure," I said passing it up to the front of the car.

"OK are we all ready?" Rose asked.

"As ready as we'll ever be," Jenna said sounding a little scared.

"Everyone be quiet, we don't know if there are any of 'them' around" Jason whispered as he opened his door.

We crept up to the stirs of the house, Jenna holding the torch and moving it around so nothing could sneak up on us, Niki and I were in the middle because we were unarmed. The night was deathly silent. We crept up to the stairs of the house and onto the deck. the double doors had glass windows so we had to break one to get in. luckily there were none of 'them' around. When we got inside we realised how cold we were so we put on one of the jackets out of our bag.

"We should look around the house before we do anything,"

"yeah," Rose agreed.

We checked all the rooms, it was a pretty small house with only two bedrooms and a bathroom. By the time we had thoroughly checked the whole house we were exhausted. We woke up when the sun was just peeking above the horizon, we could see the remoteness of the property. There was nothing around except the thin dirt road. The property had a few sheds and a couple of broken down rusty cars. It looked like it was also in the middle of a giant valley with blue mountains all around. All the grass was dried out from winter.

"Wow, it looks so pretty," I said in awe of the landscape,

"It reminds me of my parents property," Jason said leaning on the railing that surrounded the whole deck, the paint just thin ribbons on the wood indicating that it used to be white.

"What happened to them? if you don't mind me asking," I asked him,

"same as every other rotting corpse out there," he said, I could tell he was trying to act tough but was sounding sad underneath.

"Oh, I'm sorry," I said, feeling bad for reminding him.

"We need to check out those sheds, they might have useful stuff in them," he said to break the awkward silence, "do you wanna go inside and get Niki,"

"OK," I said as I walked in to get her,

"lets go," he said as we made our way across the wet, dewy, grass to the first shed.
