All six of the misfits, plus their "associates" Jaren and John, went camping together. None of them seemed to be the camping type, what with their jobs being on the internet, and them spending most of their days indoors, but when Fitz had told a story of camping when he was younger, it spurred the idea of a big camping trip. There were a total of four tents, so everyone had to buddy up with someone in their tent. The misfits got into their teams of two quite easily, so John and Jaren were left rooming together. They set up their tent and decided to go on a walk in the surrounding woods.
The boys walked steadily through the trees, talking and being careful to avoid thorns. Thinking it would just be a short stroll, they only took a water bottle and some granola bars with them. As they walked, the ground started to slightly incline, but they didn't think much of it and kept going. After about a half-hour of walking, the sun began to set, so they decided to go back. They turned around, and now the ground was at such an incline, there was a slight drop off the side of the makeshift path. Mid-story, Jaren had slightly insulted John. Fake offended, John punched Jaren's shoulder lightly, which caused the shorter boy to punch back. Playfully, John punched Jaren again while laughing and slightly pushed him to the side. Jaren placed his foot on a loose rock and felt the rock holding all of his weight begin to tumble down the side of the slope, and the sudden loss of balance caused him to go tumbling after it. He made a small whimper and reached out his hands for John to grab as he felt his body fall. John noticed and desperately reached out to grab him before his plummet, but failed and missed his hands by an inch. Jaren fell and began to roll on his side all the way down the slope. John was frozen in shock as he watched his best friend roll all the way down and smash against a rock. Jaren laid motionless at the bottom of the hill, and John snapped out of his shocked state. He quickly and cautiously walked down the slope, careful not to fall too, until he got to the bottom. At the bottom, he could see Jaren better now. The rock he had crashed into slammed into his left leg, causing it to bend in unnatural ways. John nearly vomited at the sight if it weren't for the lack of movement from his friend. Instead, John's eyes welled up with tears as he sat next to his unconscious friend. He pulled Jaren's body onto his lap and began to panic.
"Jaren?! Can you hear me? Please wake up! Please!" Was all John could choke out, but Jaren laid unmoving in his arms. "GUYS!" John yelled, desperate to get the attention of his friends to come to help them, but they had walked so far from the campsite that they hadn't heard. He called out a few more times before he gave up and was left holding Jaren and slightly rocking.
"Jaren, I am so sorry. This is all my fault. I pushed you and... and now you're hurt and barely breathing and..." John's face was now covered in tears as he rocked back and forth. "... And I never got to tell you... how much you mean to me. I love you, man. Like, really love you. I didn't know how to tell, or how you would respond, but now you're hurt because of me, and I don't know if you'll ever wake and I don't know what to do. I just don't know." John continued to cry for a while before he decided what he had to do. He cradled Jaren's still unmoving body in his arms, careful of his broken leg, and stood up. Jaren was hard for John to carry, but a sort of adrenaline surged in John, giving him the strength to walk all the way back to the campsite with Jaren in his arms. The rest of the group were sat by a fire, slightly concerned for John and Jaren's whereabouts, but assumed they were off making out somewhere. Unlike Jaren, the rest of the group weren't oblivious to John's obvious crush on Jaren, and Jaren's crush on John. It was Toby who spotted them first. She was sat facing the entrance to the woods and watched as John walked through the trees like a zombie, holding an unconscious Jaren.
"Holy shit." She said before standing and running over to the two boys. The rest of the group were confused by Toby's sudden outburst and turned to see the same thing she did. They all got up and ran over, worried for their friends.
