Emerald's Pov:
As the little island comes into view, I take it in. Three of the guards stand by my side ruin the scenery, but it's the best I'm going to get for now.
"Your highness, we are almost there."
"Thank you, George. Are you sure Father won't change his mind?"
"This is for your safety Ma'am."
"Right. He's certain I won't be recognized?"
"Very few even know that you were born. There's a reason your father kept you from going outside the walls. Especially after your mother died. Few even know of your existence outside of the family."
"Right. Well, it look's like we're here. George, I'll miss you."
"I will miss you too, Princess. There is your host. I cannot walk you over, but Grace will walk Starlight to his trailer."
I look at my guard and friend as I say goodbye to him. When I look at Starlight, she's already being walked to a trailer. Without realizing it, I already started walking over to the man. He smiles at me and helps me with my bags.
"Hello, you must be Emerald. I'm Ted Hawthorne."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Hawthorne. Thank you for your help."
We get in the truck and Ted speaks as he drives away from the dock.
"Of course. Your horse is beautiful by the way. What's her name?"
"Starlight."
"Cool. Now, I have to warn you, I have a son. His name is Peter, but everyone calls him Pin. He's the stable hand at the stables Starlight will be held at. He probably won't warm up to you right away, but he is the only other one who knows who you are. You'll also have to share a room with him."
My jaw drops at the fact that I will be sharing a room with a boy. Father would have a fit if he knew.
"That won't be a problem, will it? We don't have much room."
"Sorry for my reaction. There is no problem, sir. I was just shocked."
"Please, don't call me sir. It's just Ted. And there's no need to apologize. You did nothing wrong. Look, here we are."
I look at the beautiful little house as a boy my age walks out. I'm immediately awe struck by his handsomeness. He gives a slight smile to Ted, but slightly frowns when he sees me. As we get out of the truck, he walks over to help with my stuff. I go to grab a bag but he takes it with him.
"Please, I can take at least one of my bags."
He looks at me with slight surprise, but nods and hands it to me. I smile and follow him up the stairs into a beautiful room, covered with postcards. When I'm done looking at the room, the boy is smirking at me.
"You must be Peter. It's very nice to meet you."
I hold out my hand to shake his. He does so with a smile.
"You must be Emerald. You're not at all what I expected, and call me Pin."
"If I must call you Pin, you must call me Em. And trust me, I think many people would be surprised when meeting me. I try my best to be as normal as possible."
"Well, Em. You might want to change. We're going to the stables."
I nod and he walks downstairs. Ince he's gone, I quickly change. When I walk back downstairs, Pin smiles at me before walking forward.
"Before we go, I need to show you something."
He starts walking to a giant crate, so I follow. When I get to him, he's looking at a pony. He's sick.
"He's a moor pony, and the government would just put him down. I'm helping him, but I have to take sedatives from the stables. It's the only way to help him."
He watches my face for a reaction. The only reaction he gets is a smile.
"You're doing it for a great reason. I won't get mad at you. I can help if you want. I'm the best at getting into and out of places without being noticed."
He raises an eyebrow with a smirk.
"So, the princess is a thief? Who would've guessed?"
"No-one it the world."
"Pin, Emerald, let's go. We've got to get Starlight to the stables. Do you want to ride or drive there?"
We both smile and turn to Ted. We both yell at the same time.
"We'll ride."
I saddle up Starlight as Pun saddles his horse. It's only a few minutes before we're ready.
"This is Elvis."
"This is Starlight. Now, lead the way."
We ride for about fifteen minutes before we reach the stables. When we walk in, nobody's there, so I go find a stall for Starlight. I immediately find one with her name on it. Literally. I quickly take off all of her tack and go to find Pin.
"Pin? I've got her all settled in."
"Great. Uh, this is Sam. She owns Bright Fields."
She holds her hand out for me to shake, so I do.
"It's nice to meet you Sam. I'm Emerald, but please call me Em."
"Well, Em, I look forward to seeing you ride with us."
"Of course. I also wanted to know, is it okay if I also work here? You know, helping Pin as a stable hand."
"Sure, I don't see why not."
"Thank you. I'm sure we'll be back tomorrow."
I look at Pin who nods, but his smile is gone. However, I don't think it's because of me. We stay for a little while longer as Pin shows me the yard. It's not long before Pin and I are on Elvis. When we return to the house, I question him.
"Why were you frowning?"
"It wasn't because of you. People at Bright Fields don't all like ne that much. Mostly the two head girls. When I'm there, I'm basically a different person."
"I understand completely. I've never truly been myself, and I hope that with change while I'm here."
"Well, m'lady, I believe dinner is ready."
I laugh as he does a bow and shove him slightly.
"Please, whatever you do, don't call me that. Or your highness. Or princess. Please don't."
"Of course...m'lady."
He smirks and runs away. I laugh again and follow after him. Neither of us notice, but Ted watches us, with a smile on his face.
