Mara's Point Of View
***One week later***
We have been home from the hospital for a couple of days now, and I'm not going to lie, being a parent is quite hard. It's breaks my heart when I hear that little helpless cry of hers and to not know what she's crying about, hurts even worse.
I mean, we try everything: feeding her, changing her diaper, singing to her, and everything else we can think of, but nothing works, until eventually, she cries herself to sleep.
I mean, I don't really think that I could call my mom to help because she really doesn't care about me let alone my baby. We have tried calling Colby's mom a few times and she was really nice to suggest a few things that do seem to calm her down from time to time.
Sometimes going for a car ride does calm her down a little bit, so we were going to try and do that now since Colby and I do need a few things from the store anyways.
~
We went to a store that I haven't been to in ages. Me, my mom, and my dad used to all come here together as a family every Friday to get groceries for the week. However, ever since my parents got a divorce, my mom and I would never come here anymore because it reminded her of the times we would spend together as a family.
To be honest, I never really came here anymore, either, even when I moved out and everything. I really have no idea why. I mean, it's not that I hated the times that we had together, I loved them. I guess it just felt kind of wrong in a way, if that makes since.
~
Once we got to the store, I went to the back where the cold things were, to get some milk and eggs, while Colby and Avery went to get some bread. Then, I turned around to put the eggs in the cart, and my heart dropped to my chest. I could not believe who was standing there: my mom.
"What do you think you are doing here?!" She snapped at me. "Buying some food for me and my family, which if you haven't already guessed, doesn't include you." I snapped right back at her.
"And who is dumb enough that they would want to be in your family?" "First of all, they are not dumb and second of all, they are my family." I say pointing to Colby and Avery who were heading my direction with the bread.
"What?! Who are they?!" She demanded. "As I said before, they are my family, something that you wouldn't know anything about." "Who is the boy?!" "He is my boyfriend, and the baby is our daughter, so if you would excuse me." I say, trying to push past her to get to Colby, but she grabbed my wrist, causing me to turn back around.
"Ow! You are hurting me! Let go!" "What?! Why didn't you tell me that I have a grandchild!?" "Because you don't have a grandchild and you never will! Now let me go before I call the police!" She finally let me go and I ran over to Colby. "Come on, let's get out of here." He said as we went to the checkout.
~
We were in the car now, driving home, and Colby took my hand. I winced and Colby took his hand away. "What? What's wrong?" I looked down at my wrist and saw the bruises that my mom had gave me. You could see where her fingers were wrapped around my wrist.
"Your mom did that to you?" "Yeah, but it's okay, I'm used to it." "No, that's not okay, Mara. That's not something that anyone should have to get used to. We should go and file a report or something."
"No, that's not necessary. She wont be messing with us anymore. I promise." "Fine, if she ever lays a finger on you again, we have to do something about it, okay? No one should ever have to be treated the way she treats you." "Alright." I say letting out a sigh.
"What's wrong?" "I don't know, I just feel bad." "Feel bad? About what? Mara, you don't have a thing to feel bad about, do you understand me?" "Yeah, Yeah, I do. It's just, she's my mom and I just feel like, I-I don't know," "Its going to be alright, okay. I'll be here with you and we will get through this together. Now, what do you say we quit all of this talk about your mother and we go and get some ice cream?"
That instantly put a smile on my face. Gosh, does this boy know the way to my heart or what?
