The Strife

She ran through the wind and rain towards the sunrise. Windlord tried to hold her back with his dark chilly grips. But she struggled free. The dark fingerprints burned on her skin but she didn’t notice the pain. The little rain water imps clung at her hair, skin, clothes trying to pull her back but she ran faster that the watery grey imps with their two inch bodies and sharp teeth had no option but to fall off as she ran like the lightning; chased by a nightmarish fire; pulled by gravity of the glowing golden dawn.

The need to follow the social norms, the endless gossip, the urge to please everyone and anyone has fatigued her so much that it cracked her shell of patience. She broke open and surprised, nah, almost shocked herself by revealing a self she did not know she had!

She broke her silence last night to stand up for her wishes. In front of a crowd of people, her conservative family, she had stopped her grandma from rebuking her mom for not marrying her off to that tall, handsome and hard-to-catch barrister. She had looked her grand-dad, dad uncles, aunts and mom into the eye and announced that she’s not marrying until eight years later and she will be marrying someone she likes. Someone she already has set her heart upon.

Then she has moved on to describe her plans of studying law and working as a lawyer. The family whose female members “never have to work” as boasted by the male heads, stared at her horror-struck; horror with hidden admiration in some of the eyes.

The glorious quarter of an hour came to an end when her dad’s face got red and the hard mouth opened to tell words she dreaded. All her bravado left her and a sudden blast of fear and guilt consumed her. An unknown feeling, either fear or the fiery strife for freedom made her run out the door before the words could destroy her light. She ran like she never had since her fifth year in the world. Something told her she should run towards the dawn.

As she cut through the grey cold air, the curtains of mist lifted a bit by bit, to reveal the loveliest dawn. Shades of red and gold ran through the pale grey-blue sky and the colorless water below. She finally stopped and stared as the rush of gold and red enveloped her. The blue deepened and the air around her warmed and colored. New fragrances of dawn blossoms and old haze mingled to create unique perfumes. As the world twirled in its new beauty and opened its arms to receive the New Year, she took quite steps towards it to slip in to the “Beginning”. When she was a step away, someone called her name and her heart jumped. Fear got her claws on her light for a second or so that she took to take in the warm familiarity of the dear voice.

She turned to look back into an ever familiar face smiling and walking towards her. He stopped a breath away and took her hand in his.

When they reached the sea side, he got into the boat.

“What about my siblings and cousin who wants to live their own lives too?

 She asked suddenly anxious.

“We’ll come back to get them when we have found our feet”

 He assured.

So the boat sailed away towards the mainland glittering in the newborn light, leaving the old island drowned in its ancient ways.
