Sun

With a deep inhale I take in the vista infront of me. The grass glistens as the wind gently strokes over the field, each blade of grass energised by a glimpse of sun. Ah, the sun; so golden and pure, it's essential to all life, so powerful yet so giving in its essence of beauty. While I basque in the glorious golden globe, I think of you. I hear your voice softly on the wind and feel your invisible embrace reach to the core of my being. I feel emotions I haven't felt in years. I feel alive! Just as the meadow warms in the sun, I am also cooled by the wind and norished by the soil. If only, however, I could drink from the sweet raindrops of life and not be drowned by the downpour that is to come. Still, seeing the formation of the storm on the horizon, I know I am prepared. I hold firm onto my roots that survive in your secure and binding love, knowing that after the rain, there will be sun again.
My chain of thought is canceled out by the twitter of a bird that isn't welcome in the natural serenity surronding me. My phone is ringing. I look at the callers name on the screen and my heart grabs my lungs in excitement. With a moment of composure I answer casually.
"Talk to me!" I said, coyly, the corner of my mouth curled to one side.
"Selina! Oh man, am I glad to hear your voice, baby." The gruff voice exhaled from what seemed like a million miles away.
"Sat phone's playing ball today then, huh?"
"Don't jinx it. Listen, the squad's not being dispatched for another few months, babe. I'm really sorry. I tried my hardest but you know how the lieutenant gets, he wouldn't listen to reason this time." I could almost hear Clarks breath clenched inside his chest. A few moments of silenced passed as I processed the disappointment.
"Hey, it is what it is. We've waited this long... we can wait a bit longer. Right?" I grimaced hoping he'd buy my optimism.
"Yeah! Exactly! I mean, hey, at least I get to snore without being kicked, for a while longer" Clark chuckled, he is always so pleased with his quips.
"Oh god, now I remember why I let you get deployed!" I teased.
"Ouch! Well, I've gotten quite used to my itchy bunk. Maybe I'll just stay!"
"Just try it and I'll hunt you down myself!" I snapped, he knows I mean it.
"Ha ha, I'm sure of it. In fact, if anything happened to me, I'm counting on it." A smug tone escaped Clarks throat, then he sighed, as if breathing out the tension that the last weeks radio silence has brought about. "I really, really miss you. This doesn't get any easier. Selina... sorry I just don't want the guys to hear... Selina, I need you so much right now. Things are a bit rough this end. I could do with some of your comfort." Exhaling through his nose, I imagined he ran his labouringering fingers through his hair. Flash backs enriched my mind with the scent of his hair, the image of it shining in the sun and my admiration of how it always looked good on him, no matter what. What I wouldn't give to have it tickle my nose this very second.
I rolled my eyes, this isn't helpful, so I cleared my throat and answered his hint for reassurance. "Dickhead, you got this, alright?" My eyes twinkle as I mischievously encourage my fiancè. I lie back in the grass and let the sun warm my face. This is why I love the sun so much, the sat phone only works when the satellites align correctly, and that's usually this time of day. I push the air out of my lungs in a quick burst and nestle in for a lengthy catch up with my favourite person in the world... not that there are many of us left, now.
