Prologue
I have a mate. He's a very important person. The problem is, how can I love him? We come from two different worlds. I'm a human. He's not. He has power. I don't. How can I find it in my heart to care for him? Find it in my heart to betray my Father. My family. They're the reason we're in hiding. They're the reason us humans are looked down upon. As if we are annoying bugs in a world that was made for them. And only them.
And he's one of them. Probably the most important. He is the one who enforces all of the laws. And kills people who defy him under his rule. This is the man who made a law that forces teenangers to get assigned a Pack to work for on their sexteenth birthday. What a horrible birthday.
Without him, we'd all be free. Me and my best friend wouldn't be home-schooled. And we wouldn't be living in the middle of the woods. Do you know how restricting our life is? I've always dreamed of living in a big house. That won't happen any time soon. It may never happen. This is our life. And the one who made our life that way is my mate.
How can I love that? He's a ruthless, cruel man.
