During the revolution: Little is known, likely due to her quiet nature. She was gentle, supportive of Alexandra and Alexei, and would often take on the role of governess for the children.
So when the Bolsheviks came to take the Tsar and his family away to Ekaterinburg, she burst into tears and turned to a colleague of hers:
"I am so frightened of the Bolsheviks, Mr Gibbes. I don't know what they will do to us."
During her time in captivity she did not catch the attention of the guards; she kept her head down, and waited, helping the Tsesarevich who could no longer walk, and his poor mother, whose nerves were frayed beyond repair.
On the last night, when the Bolsheviks woke everyone and escorted them downstairs to the basement, she took two pillows with her, both with gems sewn inside.
As the first volley of bullets eliminated the other servants, the Tsar, and Tsarina, Anna was saved by the bullets, and was merely rendered unconscious by a lesser wound that sent her flying to the floor.
When she woke up, she was amazed to find herself alive. She checked her vitals, sat up, amazed, and cried out:
"Thank God.
God has saved me."
But the guards were still in the room.
Seeing her, alive and moving, they finished the job with their bayonets. But this timid lady, so kind and gentle in her life, spent her last moments fighting.
She did not give up her life easily.
