The beeping of the cashier, the frequent cha-ching and the fading voices of leaving costumers were always what Lana would hear every summer break. Working sucked, she knows but she had no choice but to do it for her studies and for her family. It was 5 p.m. and it meant closing time for Munched Up Crunch. Lana got the damp towel on the sink and began to wipe the steel counter clean. She threw it back into the sink then washed her hands. She wiped her went palms on the side of her pants then removed her apron and hat. Lana grabbed the keys from a shelf and spun it around on her finger while whistling. "Lana, the others and I'll go ahead, okay? See you next week." said Gina, her coworker. She just nodded since she was tired and confused. She didn't know why she was confused, she just felt it. She went outside the store and pulled the door.She inserted the key then locked it. Lana walked back home hoping that she was in time for dinner. Her mom said she'd cook turkey burgers for tonight and guess what? Lana loved turkey burgers! In fact, she loved everything her mom made for her. She loved her mom and she knew that with all her heart. Her dad, not so much. She barely even knew who he was. Why? Her dad left them when she could even walk. Let's not talk about that and move onto Lana walking along her neighborhood. Kids were having joyrides on their bikes, elder people greeted her as she passed by and lanterns on the streets were being lit up. Lana finally reached the front door of her house. She opened the door and once she stepped inside, she removed her coat and hung it on the wall next to her. The smell of turkey burgers arose from the kitchen and led her to it. She placed her hand on the wall and dangled inside.
"Mom! I'm home! I hurried up since I heard you were making my favorite tonight. Where's Nate by the way? He'd usually be in the living room playing with some friends." said Lana as she hugged her mom.
"Well sweetie, your brother Nate is booking flights to Melbourne which is scheduled for this weekend. We'll be going there and you'll have to stop working for a while." explained her mom.
"Melbourne?! Oh my gosh mom, I love you! You just read my mind!! I've been dreaming of this for as long as I could remember. I can't believe this is happening to me!" Lana rapidly said.
"Honey, come sit with me at the table. I have to tell you why we're going there." her mom brought her to the table in the kitchen and sat down. Mrs. Beckett cleared her throat, "I know you're aware of your father. We made contact yesterday night and we agreed that it's time you should see him and know who he is. We'd be seeing each other in Melbourne this weekend. Please don't be mean to your stepbrothers. Get to know them first then you could create conflicts but try your best not to, love."
Lana stood up from her chair "Woah, stepbrothers? How many do I have? God, I thought this was something good!" she asked.
"Lana! Can you just... listen to me? You have 3 of them. You'll be seeing them tomorrow." Sarah (Lana's mum) scolded.
"Who are they? When will I know more about them?" Lana toned down her voice.
"Their names are Beau, Luke and Jai. Beau's your oldest brother. Jai and Luke are twins. You'll love them, I promise. They're all nice boys to me and I bet they'll be the same to you." Sarah sweetly said.
"I'll see about that on Saturday." Lana protested.
She stood up and left the kitchen. She went up to her room and landed facefirst on her pillow and screamed while squeezing the pillow. Lana lifted her head and got her Wreck This Journal. She flipped to the most random page and started doing what the page has instructed. She threw it on the ground and shoved her face back into the stuffed pillow. Nate, her brother, entered the room and sat next to her.
"Hey, Lana. Listen, I know it's hard but you won't regret it at the end. We'll be leaving really early so try not to tire yourself. Eat now so that you could sleep early." Nate comforted. She turned and laid on her back.
