“Ari.” A voice says from the distance. “Ari. Wake up.” It says again. Jace strokes my cheek. He sat at the edge of the bed. “Mmf! Five more minutes.” I pull the covers over my head, shielding myself from the glare. He gently pulls them back. “No!” I whine, attempting to pull the covers back. “You’ll be late for school.”

“Ugh! Since when are you my brother?” I groan. He gives me a look. “Fine.” I sit up and rub my eyes blearily. 7:00. “You have 30 minutes to get ready.” He says, getting off the bed. I blink again before I answer. “Fine. Get out.” The door closes. I don't get dressed in my regular clothes. I pick up my Shadowhunter gear. I look in my closet. Before I went to bed, I put my gear in the closet and left my mundane clothes in the suitcase. For some reason, now I feel almost naked without my gear on. I put my daggers and stele in belt loops made for weapons and steles. I put my witchlight in a special pouch. A knock sounds. “Come in.” To my surprise, it’s Izzy. “Hey, you want to head to the kitchen with me?” I snag my bag and close the door behind me. “Sure.” On the way down, Izzy breaks the silence.

“You know, you’re really good. The fact that you caught on that fast is amazing. That’s why I looked scared.”

“Izzy, here’s what’s impressive. I think of you as my friend already. I usually have to wait a while to trust them enough, but you, besides Alec and Jace, are the only person that understands who I am. In second grade, that's when I knew I was different. I was eating lunch when I saw a boy. We looked right at each other, and nobody else say him. I always called him 'the boy with the golden eyes.' Only now do I realize that was Jace. He's always been watching." Izzy stares at me with dark eyes. Eyes that makes me surprised she's Alec's sister.

"I remember just when Jace came from Idris, he went missing for a day. He came back that evening saying he a girl that saw him. He was 7. Nobody believed him. He described a pretty girl with long blonde hair like him, and blue grey eyes. He said the girl was tall, athletic and graceful. He was talking about you. Every so often as the years went on, he'd leave up to three times a week, he never said why. He was going to see you. For the last four years, since we were ten, he's going seven days a week."

"Iz, I didn't know you knew. I thought he was a figment of my imagination, I actually thought he was angel. Don't tell Jace I said that." The corners of her mouth turns up. "I knew, he always referred the pretty girl as 'the girl who could see me.' He meant you." We round the corner and see Jace sitting at the table. "Glad to see you guys are getting along. What were you guys talking about?" He tilts his head to the side. "Nothing." We chorus. I walk over and open the fridge with a clank. I snag a protein shake. "You guys wanna walk to school with me?" They nod enthusiastically.

I walk out the front door this time and start heading in the direction of my school, me in the middle, Jace on my right, and Izzy on my left. "What school do you go to? Jace never told me." She shoots Jace a glare. "I go to Kinard, I'm in seventh grade." She nods but continues to glare at Jace occasionally. 20 minutes later, we come to Kinard. "Can we follow you around?" Izzy asks, a hopeful look in her eyes. "Sure, Jace's been following me for years, I don't mind." I glance around and see people staring at me. "Damn, I forgot, they can't see you. Now they'll be telling me to go the councilor's office."

"Sorry," Jace mutters, a small blush rising. "It's ok. Let's go." I walk in and see my friends, sitting or laying away from the general crowd. "Hey, guys." I call. They glance over and their widen. "Chl-Ari? What are you wearing?" Abbey, demands, sitting up. I glance down, seeing my Shadowhunter gear, black leather with ankle cuffs and wrist cuffs to protect me from demon poison. "My clothes, what else?" I answer.

"Well, you didn't tell us you were going Goth!" Bailey Walder exclaims. "I'm not. I just like black. I know my purpose. To help others." To protect mundanes from demons.I think. "There's nothing wrong with liking black." I finish, crossing my arms. "I for one, love black." Izzy states, raising her hand. "Well, I know you do, you wear it all the time." I say to Izzy. "I didn't say anything." The group choruses. A blush rises to my cheeks.
